I have a quick question. I am US citizen married to a Canadian woman, we live in California. She is moving back to Canada August 2014. I am retiring in the spring of 2016, When should I start the process of immigration paper work So I can move to Canada when I retire in 2016.

current applicants are landing in 5-8 months, so it'll be quite a while. There's no telling what the processing time will be in late 2015. It could go up or it could remain consistent. The forms will certainly be updated before then, and FBI records and medical exams have expiration dates. The best you can do now is start compiling "relationship proof" since that is the most time consuming part of the application, and reading the guide and forms so you know what will be needed. Keep in mind, once you retire, you can also be in canada as a visitor while the application is processing. Best estimate in "today's" trend is if you wanted to be completely done by may 2016, you'd want to file your application sometime between nov 2015 and jan 2016.

Hi Craig,

Since the processing times are constantly changing, I can't give you an exact `window', but I would shoot for early-mid 2015.

Most American applications are processed in Canada (Ottawa), so the long processing times shown on the CIC website for the LA and Buffalo visa offices, are for American applicants that have some sort of issue (such as inadmissibility concerns) or if there is a question regarding the validity of your relationship with your sponsor. The vast majority of Americans are being approved in less than 12 months.

Or...perhaps a better plan is to start the process NOW.

You don't have to move to Canada when you receive your PR, but you will need to come to Canada to `Land'. Once you do, you're free to return to California until you are ready to move. However, you MUST spend at least 730 days out of the first 5 years (and each subsequent 5 year period) LIVING IN Canada.

This would only work if your spouse is a Canadian citizen. If she is only a PR of Canada, you cannot submit the application until she has returned to Canada...where she would need to remain until your PR has been processed.

Thank you for the quick reply. My wife is a Canadian citizen, and will be sponsoring me for PR. I plan to move to Canada in 2016, we sold our house and live in an apartment, only plan to come to US to visit children whenever I can.Plan to live permanently In Canada. Need to wait for Social Security at 62, Will continue to work up until I leave . Just need to know approximately how much before I plan to retire that the paperwork needs to be started. Thank you for your help. We just went through this process 5 years ago to bring my wife to US, took about 12months. So, this should not be too different than that process, hopefully, . The time frames must be worst cast scenarios, problems with application. Good to know. Thank you Again

Question..the 5669 form, background declaration.. the ones that will be filled out by PR's kids, who are not accompanying him to Canada - can he complete and sign these forms or do they need to complete and sign these forms?

A quick question, Someone told me that i can request a change in visa office requested. I am in Canada on work permit and my wife who is a citizen is my sponsor. By default, New Delhi is my visa office as i am an Indian Citizen. But i want to request ottawa as my visa office( for processing). Can anyone please help me , if this is possible ?? if yes what reasons should i add in the letter explaining my request? I have a full time job( which is not easy to get) plus i am sharing all the expenses with my wife.

no because per the checklist, it goes with the applicant's papers. the relationship is reviewed after sponsorship approval.

Hi! Can anyone tell me, i am sponsoring my husband soon. In document checklist they have asked me for employment letter, starting period of employment, salary and hours per week. I just started working a week ago through an agency. Agency gave me a job letter on my request but didn't mention the hours. I am already late regarding my application as i was unemployed. My question is
Is it ok if i attach this job letter without my hours?
I am working with agency and they can say anytime not to go to work as my few co-workers were sent home. would it be safe to use the job letter as i can be unemployed again anytime? or i am just over-thinking ?

My boyfriend is sponsoring me through outland, we are common-law partners. Currently I am in Canada on a work permit that expires end of November this year from the United States. We are hoping to have our application submitted by the end of the month. My question is what do I put as my country of residence and my residential address? I will leave Canada and come back as a Visitor once my work permit expires.

I originally put in Canada and my address here because I am still here legally until November, but now I am questioning that because my work permit will probably expire before my PR comes through? Should I change everything to the United States, or keep it as it is?

Your Canadian address is fine. I put Canada as my country of residence because I have been living here since March 2012. CIC seems fine with that. Also you don't actually need to leave Canada and come back as a visitor. Many US applicants who are in Canada just apply online for a visitor extension . I have done this and CIC gave me 12 months because I have an Outland PR application in progress. Good luck.
