Hello,

I read something about if you are granted your PR it is only valid until the time your passport expires. My (soon to be) spouse and I will be sending in our papers this summer, but his passport expires in 2016. Does that mean by 2016 if he still hasn't reached the amount of time that he has stayed in Canada to apply for Citizenship, that we have to do all the PR application again? Or does he just renew his passport and nothing happens to his PR card?

Also, we've been teaching in China for 1 year. I'm Canadian and he is Brazilian. I read that he will have to do a police check if he's lived somewhere other than Brazil for more than 6 months. The problem is, we are leaving China in April, and not getting married until July. From what I understand the police checks are only valid for 3 months. What are we to do? Because the police checks will be expired by the time we send in our application and it is beyond difficult to try to get something from China when i'm in Canada.

Any help would be great, thank you!!
Once your spouse lands and becomes a PR - his PR card will be valid for five years. The validity period has nothing to do with the expiry date on his passport.

Yes - he will need to provide a police check from China. Yes - police certificates cannot be more than three moths old when CIC receives them. You should apply for a new Chinese police certificate from Canada. If it takes a long time to arrive you can include the old one with your application along with a letter stating that you are in the process of obtaining a new one and will send it to the visa office as soon as it arrives.

No - your file will not be moved to the UK office. It will be processed by Singapore. If an interview is required it will be held in Bangladesh.

The posted processing time for the Singapore office is 24 months. So you probably still have a bit more waiting to do:

E-cas seldom updates and in many cases doesn't go to "in process" until the time you receive your passport request (PPR). It's a vaguely useful barometer.

In order to sponsor the spouse, Leon has mentioned that the applicant should not be on social assistance. Is it at the time of application, or any time during the stay in Canada? I heard that some people were saying that once you are on social assistance, you cannot sponsor for 10 years etc.

Hello All,

I am goint to start a outland PR application for my spouse. My spouse will be getting a L1 visa to work in Canada as well. Will the outland PR application affect his visa status or vice versa?

Also, is it correct that you can start on Part 2 immigration forms only sponsorship application is approved?

Thanks for your help!

At the time the application is filed and while the application is being processed.

They will have no impact on each other.

No - that's incorrect. When you submit the sponsorship application, you must submit both parts of the application together. If you only submit the sponsor forms first, your application will be returned to you unprocessed since it is incomplete. Please take time to read through the guide in detail to make sure you understand what is required as part of the application.

I am a Canadian citizen and wish to sponsor my American husband. We have a daughter who was born in the US, so she has Canadian citizenship by default, do I need to apply for her Proof of Canadian Citizenship before applying to sponsor my husband?

Hi Panda58

What I have done was, I applied for both of my daughters Canadian Citizenship Certificates then got their Canadian Passports. I included them along with my Canadian passport and my husbands British passport (certified copies) in our applications to prove that both kids are already Canadian Citizens (which I believe was easier).
Hope this helps

What that referes to is the validity of the passport before landing. When PR is pproved, the visa will be valid to enter Canada before a specific date. That date will not be later than either the time allowed by CIC for the applicant to land (I hear that it is of about 6 months) or the expiration date of the passport (and some also say that the validity of the medical exams or any granted extension thereof granted by CIC), whichever is sooner.
