Frege, thank you so much for the information!

With the information given, I just might persue the study permit.

Here's one more question...

I'm looking to enroll in Algonquin college, they have some programs/courses that last about 6 months. Is it possible to have a study permit that lasts 6 months? if it lasts six months, can I apply for an extension so I can stay in ON for another 6-8 months to complete our common law?

If you apply for a study permit, you cannot apply for sponsorship. It's one or the other. I'm not familer with student permits so that's all I really know about it haha

Could I do a 6 month program, have a study permit good for a year, and stay legally in Canada with that? even though I technically wouldn't be in school for 6 months?

Could I live with my boyfriend while I'm studying there? or would I have to live on campus?

Also, for Parker; is that $1040 for both persons? or is that for one in total?

Only the person being sponsored, and it's one person :)

Ok...one or the other...but I'm asking if I can LEGALLY live with my boyfriend while I'm doing the 6 month program at Algonquin. At the end of my 6 months for school...could I apply for an extension to stay for another 6 months or so? that way, I would have been in school, and living with my boyfriend. When I'm done with my 6 month program, and I'm granted an extension (not for my study permit, but for a longer stay in Canada) we would have lived together for 12 months, correct?

I read that if I'm doing a program that lasts 6 months or less, that I wouldn't need a permit, so is it possible to do that (attend school for 6 months) and request some kind of extension?

I'm so sorry for all the crazy vague messy questions... I'm just really anxious to be with my love. We've got 8 months to go, but I just want to get a head start.

I think what Kristina means is that she'd be living with her boyfriend while she studies so that she can apply for sponsorship later on. I don't see how this could be illegal.

Also, a person can continue to study while they have a sponsorship application going.

Kristina, if you want to work at all during your studies (on campus, or, with additional authorization, off campus), you'll need a study permit. So if you plan to string together several short programs, it might be better to have a study permit. The answers will probably be in OP 12.

My boyfriend said he has "R9"? on his credit, currently.
I'm not sure about it. Ask him to figure out if he's undischarged.

After being legally in Canada for any reason, you can request a six-month extension as a visitor. It's recommended you apply 30 days before your time runs out.

If they think you'll comply with the requirements (not working, not studying, leaving when you're supposed to), the extension ought to be granted.

Frege you are awesome! thanks so much for all the answers.

Since I won't be there until Aug/Sep...me and my boyfriend thought it was best that I just save up money until then. Work here in California until mid Aug, or so... I'd also have family here in the states giving me money to help. My tuition won't be much, I checked it out for myself. Also living with my boyfriend will save me money. I also think I can get financial help from the school if I qualify for it. Even as an international student.

Can you please tell me if "R9" on credit is something that will keep my boyfriend from sponsoring me?

I am a Canadian woman. My boyfriend is from Sweden.
We met alamost a year ago. We are planning on getting married in Feb 2013. he is currently here until April of 2013 since he planned his trip for 6 months. Since he is from Sweden he did not have to get a visitors visa unless he was going to be here for more than 6 months. When he first got here we did not plan on getting married until the summer time. However he asked me as a Christmas surprise to get married on Valentines day. How do we proceed for him not to have to go back to Sweden in April? I have gathered from the information that i have read to be a family sponsor when we are married.
The problem that we might face is that we met in an online game. So there is not much email proof we can provide and we talked everyday on Skype so there was little need for emails. The emails that we did share (some ) are of a very personal nature.
Will this hinder our application?
Should we wait until we are married to submitt any applications or should we apply now before we get married?

Not sure on how to proceed from here and the website is very confusing. I have tried multiple times to call CIC but i never reach anyone since they operate on the same hours as my work schedule.

You can't apply now.

To apply - you must either be married or common law (common law = have lived together for a minimum of one full year). You will have to wait until you are married to apply.

Are you planning on applying inland or outland? If you apply inland, he will have implied status as soon as you submit the application.

As for the evidence - yes, you need it to prove your relationship is real. If you don't have emails, what about photos, joint bank accounts, joint bills, etc.?

Unfortunately, I don't know anything about those credit codes. Maybe someone else here will know.

Yes, but the standard is six months. If you want longer, you might need more justification of why you need it. Most people here have just kept adding six-month extensions while they waited for their outside-Canada PR.

If you enter Canada as a visitor, you won't be able to upgrade to a student permit without leaving the country. If you enter as a student, you can renew your authorization to study for as long as you remain a student. You can certainly apply for an extension as a visitor in that case too.

I've just noticed that as a U.S. citizen or permanent resident, you can apply for a study permit when you enter Canada. (Section 214 of the IRP regulations.) That suggests to me that if you have a letter of admission from your school, it's routine for the border officers to just give you your study permit on the spot.

I've just read in OP 12 that if you want off-campus work authorization, you'll need to be enrolled in a degree program to even be considered.

Creditors use "R" codes to indicate how current a person is with paying their bills. A code of R1 means "this person pays their bills on time, usually within 30 days". Then there's R2 through R8 which get progressively worse. An R9 means "this account has been written off and/or passed over to a collections agency, or this person declared bankruptcy". Your overall credit bureau score is based (mostly) on how many R-codes you have in your credit file, and how good or bad those codes are. If you have lots of R1 or R2 codes, you're considered a low-risk account to any creditor, whereas multiple R3s to R9s indicate you're a high-risk case for any potential creditor who might loan you money.

His credit bureau score will have absolutely no impact on his ability to sponsor you. The only thing that WOULD have an impact is if he were still in a current state of undischarged bankruptcy (meaning that he declared bankruptcy, but not enough time has yet passed for it to be considered "finished" on his record). You mentioned he was bankrupt a few years ago. If that's the case, then it's already over and done with, long ago, assuming it was his only one. If it was his first ever bankruptcy, it would be automatically discharged after 9 months. If it was his second bankruptcy, it would be automatically discharged after 24 months...unless he had "extra income" (any amount that's greater than the minimum threshold), in which case it would be 36 months until it was discharged.

So depending on when he entered bankruptcy, and whether it was his first or second, it may or may not have already been discharged.

The first $1040 is for your application.
The second $1040 is your consultation fee for this forum.
I'm the current comptroller - please forward the necessary sum directly to me.

Thank you for the information Leon. It is greatly apprecaited.

I have looked over the info unfortuneately it does not give all info that i need. What happens since my soon to be spouse does not have a vistors visa?
It was not required as long as he was going to be here for up to 6 months?

So we still need to apply for a vistitors visa with a sponsorship from me as a spouse? or do we apply for the TR visa with the sponsorship app?

The site does not give all information needed and i have tried to call the government office repeatedly to no avail. The line is always busy and it just gives me times to please call back :(

If you get married AND you submit your application inland (within Canada) BEFORE his visitor status expires, then he won't have to leave Canada. He will be allowed to stay until they give you a yes/no decision on your application.

However, CIC wants/prefers/expects people to still file for a TRV extension even if they're under implied status. I, personally, wouldn't worry about it...but I don't make the rules.
