Hello i am a Canadian citizen wanting to sponsor my husband who is in Canada as temporary visa. I came across a question about social assistance. So before i got married to my husband i was dating a guy from 2015-2019 where the guy i was dating had to apply for social assistance as he was unemployed but at that time they said if we applied as common law we would get more money so we did that. So every month i had to report my pay slips to the welfare in order for them to give us the money. I have never personally applied for social assistance but at that time my ex bf did as a common law. So here are my few questions where i am confused.
So in the ircc forms there are questions like have you ever been on social assistance? Should i say yes or no
Have you been in common law relationship mention his name and stuff? Which i am going to disclose the information because i dont want to lie on any forms.

but here is the issue so in 2019 i broke up with the guy on bad terms. And i did my taxes for past 7 years in 2020 from h&r block and i wasnt thinking about social assistance and stuff at that time and i filed all my taxes as single because i was single at that time. And h&r block never asked me cuz they just pulled my work documents and filed it.

so my question is if i mention i was in common law will ircc say why didnt you file your taxes as common law?

You were a part of your ex-common law's benefit unit for social assistance, so you have to answer yes to the question that you were on social assistance. Social Assistance does share information with IRCC and vice versa.

Yes, you must declare that you were in a previous common-law relationship.

If they ask, then just provide an honest explanation; that is all you can do at this point. It's better to be honest and forthcoming than to be caught in a lie.

The question is are you on social assistance. If i tick yes i automatically become ineligible for the spousal sponsorship.
Are you still ON social assistance? If not currently, then it's NO.
I think you need to make sure that you are no longer in a common law relationship with your ex-partner and that has been communicated to the social services. And that he is not receiving welfare including you as the family unit.
You were on social assistance.

Currently i was never on social assistance my partner was i was the common law prtner i just had to report my paychecks to welfare at the time during 2015-2019
You were on social assistance as a family unit with your common law partner. That's why you had to report your pay cheques to show that family income was LOW and that's why you were given welfare.

Yes sorry i am new to this so i have no idea about this sorry
Just double check with welfare to make sure that your name no longer linked to his file and you are not on social assistance.

It's likely that you are off his file since you haven't been reporting your income. But just incase... he kept you there and tried to get welfare.

I can't help you on this.
I think that's provincial, so may be some member knows if you let them know which province you got welfare in.
Or you can google. You were able to submit pay cheque before. I am sure you can track how you did that.
