Hello everyone! I hope you all are staying positive and entertained during these unsure times. I have just recently applied to sponsor my spouse and was hoping to pick your brains on the one point of our marriage that I was thinking may be a problem... We met in June 2019, got engaged November 2019 and married in March 2020. Applied for PR Sponsorship in the end of April 2020 (boy was it difficult gathering everything during covid19....but anyway). Our marriage is of course 100% genuine, but I guess everyone says that right. The point that makes me nervous is that we got married at our house. It was just me, my husband, and our 2 witnesses. I have no contact with my biological family because I was taken into custody of the government from a young age. Weddings give me anxiety because of lack of family i would have there.. i really didn't want any darkness on that special day. I provided a letter in our application that confirms that I was indeed a "crown ward" which means that the government had custody of you, not parents. I provided this incase immigration thought I was making an excuse. I never thought anything of my preference to getting married until we started this application. I don't want it to work against us and i will feel so bad if we get denied because of a past that i really can't control. We of course explained this in thorough detail in our application, and explained that we had plans to go to my husband's home country for a honeymoon and to have a very intimate dinner with his family and friends but cannot right now because of travel restrictions. Again, this marriage is completely genuine!! I would hate to be denied based off of the way we got married. What do you guys think?

For proof of marriage we supplied:
  • Joint bank account
  • e-transfer history showing multiple money transfers he would send me over the months, amounts varying from $100 to $3000. (we thought this showed sufficient financial support, couldn't really think of another way to demonstrate this other than joint bank accounts and e transfer history)
  • Rental lease with both our names on it
  • Mail with both our names on it
  • Home insurance with both our names on it
  • Record of solemnization (*** I know this is not considered valid but our marriage certificate is on pause for processing right now because of covid-19 and we explained this on a separate letter).
  • 10 pages of photos during the dating, engaged, and married phases of our relationship. also included a college of various pictures throughout the months of us laying in bed together. this is something ive always taken pictures of for myself and figured it would actually work in our favour when I was browsing through my pictures
  • what i think is perhaps our strongest evidence.. our WhatsApp history which shows over 43,000 messages sent between June 2019-March 2020, and then I also included 10 screenshots of specific conversations that showcase the romantic nature of the relationship
  • marriage status on facebook, both facebook accounts with each other in profile picture, public posts on instagram of both of us together
  • plane tickets from the trip we took when we got engaged, the tickets have both our names on it
  • a letter from my best friend
  • a letter written by myself further explaining the relationship and how much we love each other, how we met, our future plans, etc

Where is your spouse from? You say you have a rental lease in both your names when did you start living together? What is your partner’s status in Canada?
You have a lot more evidence than many so I wouldn’t be worried.

My partner is from Spain, and is currently in Canada on a closed work permit. Our lease started on March 1, 2020. However we spent 5-6 nights together per week leading up to that. I indicated this in our application and also, for the pictures provided I included a section of us sleeping together over the months at both my old apartment my partners old apartment. I was hoping this would show intimacy but also evidence that we did indeed spend most nights together.
We tried our best to provide as much evidence as possible we’re just worried that the way we got married could possibly come across as a “marriage of convenience” which it absolutely is not (also something I never even thought about until we started this app...)

Of course you realize that spending time at each other’s apartment doesn’t really count but it seems like you have lots of proof of a relationship. As long as you explain why you had a little ceremony it is not a big deal. You were essentially living together when you got married. Although a fast relationship it is not overly fast. You didn’t get married after a few months of dating. There is very little he gains by receiving a Canadian PR due to his EU passport. The people who are the most organized and have the most proof tend to be the ones who are the most concerned.

Yes i know that doesn’t count, I just figured it would show we were actually in love and spent most of our nights together, and that although we didn’t sign a lease together at that point, we’ve actually been essentially living together for quite some time. Thank you so much for your responses. We have nothing to hide and aren’t lying, it’s just you read so many stories of people getting denied that I’m finding myself getting paranoid over every little thing. The marriage was perfect for us and I find myself thinking “I hope it’s perfect for my government too...”
Overall such a stress inducing process

From what I've read on this forum in different threads is that if the officer doesn't think there's enough evidence provided, they usually request more. They would usually send a formal message asking for further documents to provide support to relationship/co-habitation and give you 30 days to submit. So keep saving documents of proof of cohabitation, even though you've already submitted, keep gathering as they may request more. If there is a further question on validity of marriage, they also can request an interview at a way later date. In other words, I haven't read anyone being out-right rejected....they usually send a request for more info first if there is any concern from the officer. So if you don't hear anything from them, no news is probably good news.

Keep in mind that you submitted just last month, and with this COVID situation, you are MONTHS and MONTHS away from receiving any kind of update on your application.

Good luck :)

Hi!! Thank you so much for this :) that is very reassuring. I thought they could just deny you if they don’t feel comfortable with certain information.
On the topic of covid- my partner is currently here on a closed work visa and his place of employment has closed because of economic turbulence due to covid19. We planned for about a 4 month wait for his open work permit to come. Do you know if there’s any special considerations being given for these unique circumstances? I’ve tried researching myself but haven’t been able to find anything on the topic.
Thanks a bunch!

No special consideration. Plan on it taking longer than 4 months due to pandemic delays.

By looking at the spreadsheets it appears that NOTHING has been done (no updates or progress) on anyone's application since March. I'm guessing this is due to the COVID situation. I don't think there are many employees physically present in the office to look at or work on our applications. I'm afraid that you will be waiting a long time for that work visa to come.

I was worried about the same thing. I mean, what’s one supposed to do? We can survive about 6 months but after that, with only one of us making an income... and we applied inland so it’s not like we could leave and live in my partners home country (Spain) until the work visa comes. We are healthy financially, for now, but as a sponsor I wouldn’t be able to receive social assistance either... strange situation.
