Just so I am clear....

I am sending in application to be approved to sponsor, my spouse's sponsorship application, AND the open work permit application all together. Right?
I do not need to apply to approved to sponsor beforehand?

Wish the CIC website was more clear or the call centre was more accessable.

Thank you in advance for any information provided by you guys! :-*

if your spouse is from the us, then it's best to be applying outland, which means there is no eligibility for a work permit. US applicants who apply outland are getting approved in 4-6 months. do not pay attention to the timeframe on the website, it does not reflect what real applicants face. there is no reason for a us citizen to apply inland. basically if you apply outland the applicant can very well be approved within the same amount of time a work permit is issued through an inland application. and the inland applicant would need to wait an addition 2 years to complete the pr process. this work permit for inland applicants really does not give an advantage to us citizens.

to clarify... for outland applications BOTH the applicant AND the sponsor applications are sent together in the same package to CIC in mississauga. CIC will process the sponsor's application then internally transfer the applicant's application to the Ottawa visa office for processing. again outland applicants are not eligible for the spousal sponsorship work permit.

if you are applying inland, then i would really reconsider. yes, applicants can apply outland while IN canada as a visitor, student or worker. the outland application has nothing to do with where the applicant is physically. it's about where they are from.

This is amazing information @CDNPR2014 The information you provided changes everything. I guess the only risk would be if we choose to apply Outland and it takes longer we are kinda screwed for applying for a work permit. He really does need to work as soon as possible for obvious financial reasons. Still, THANK YOU soooo much for this information. You just made my day!

Also, if applying outland, does that mean his medical has to be done in USA? We will be in the US in May, how long is the medical and FBI clearance certificates good for? SHould we get those things while we are there in May?

Also, does applying outland apply if we are just "Common-Law" (living together for one year)?

You can get the medical done in Canada and it is good for one year. The FBI report takes a few months to get back and I think it is good for 6 months. Hopefully someone else can confirm this. I remember it was good for 3 months and then they changed it. You can get your fingerprints taken in Canada at a Police Dept.

I would have the medical done as the last thing before you send off your application. Make sure you find a Panel Physician to do the medical exam.

Some members didn't get the FBI back in time so they sent the application in without it just explaining it was still in process and then sent it in later. I think it just depends on your time frame and preference.

You are welcome Stevin!! This forum is so helpful during the process to help answer any of your questions. I am not sure that I would have been able to complete mine without this group. Just ask anything you are not sure of so that your process will go more smoothly.

Smiles :)

You are 100% about that. I hope that with all I learned I can, in turn, be helpful to others going through the same process when I am all set. Have a wonderful day! Hope you are enjoying Canada thus far!

Someone mentioned the FBI background check. The FBI states in bold across the webpage that it takes 13-15 weeks to process. They're not kidding - mine was received by the FBI Oct 31, and I didn't get my paperwork back until Feb 28. I called a week before and they said they were processing requests received before October 20. The next week mine was mailed.

And a piece of advice: the lady who did my fingerprints told me the FBI has rejected requests because the prints weren't clear enough. She always does 2 sets, just to be sure. If you are in a time crunch and want to make sure your request isn't bounced back, you might want to do this as well.

Thank you so much for the heads up! We cannot apply until August, I am just getting all my ducks in a row now! And yes, I saw the warning about processing time - Yikes. Thanks again!
