Yes...that's what I said ;)

The Canadian sponsor must be a Canadian citizen, for this `option' to work.

I just realized that I pressed the wrong "quote" and explained it. Meant to press the quote of the Kilitun.

LOL!

Personally, I found it very surprising that this was even possible! I thought that no matter what, a PR had to live in Canada for 2 out of 5 years to meet their residency requirements...no way around it, but...I'm happy to see that I was wrong.

Well had I known about this little tidbit of info, I could have "sponsored" my wife while working in US. Once she landed in Canada, we could have turned around and went back to US and her PR would still be maintained by living with me.

Although it is misrepresentation as I didn't really "intend to live" in Canada after wife gets PR.

I'm in a similar situation. My fiance is a Canadian PR while I'm a US citizen. We're getting married this October and still haven't decided whether to go through outland or inland. We have been in a 5 year relationship and have been in a LDR since December 2012. I've visited him twice since he moved to Canada.

Here are my concerns:
1. If we go forinland, it will take around a year before I get an OWP, right? I've read somewhere that we can only apply for OWP after AOR of Stage 1, which will take approx. 6 months then the processing time for OWP which is a couple more months.
2. If we go for outland (which will go to CPP-Ottawa) and given that there will be no red flags, can I "stay" in Canada while waiting for the whole application to finish? I'm aware that I won't be allowed to study or work while waiting. Do I have to go back to the US after our wedding then mail the application to CPP-Ottawa or can I just stay in Canada for a long term visit? How do I apply for an extension for my visit?

My fiance and I are tired of being in a LDR. :'( So we're leaning towards a faster processing time but we dont want to be apart anymore. It's okay if I dont have to work for the time being. We're trying to save as much money as we can before we get married.

What do you guys think? ???

You can apply for OWP only after AIP (approval in principle) which is stage 1 approval. The time to this is around 10-11 months from app submission.

It's no problem to stay in Canada while an outland PR app is in program. Usually you can "visit" Canada no problem and will get an initial 6-months visitor status. When that time is almost up, you can simply apply to extend it and for a US citizen it's again usually no problem to do.

You will mail your app to CPC-Mississauga. After sponsor approval (around 1 month), they will mail the app on to CPP-Ottawa. You can send in the app while your living in the US or "visiting" in Canada.

Maintaining or canceling the green card (if required) is not an issue, we don't plan to maintain it. The question is would she (just sponsored as a spouse to Canadian Citizen) be eligible to receive temporary work permit? (during the 1 year typical In-Land Application for Permanent Residency)

She could apply for an Open Work Permit (OWP) once you have been approved as her sponsor (AIP). The current estimated processing time for AIP, is ~9-10 months, based on the Inland 2013 thread. The cost of the OWP is $150

When you say 9~10months for Stage 1, I am confused because my colleague at work sponsored his newly wed wife (entered via visitor visa) via INLAND (Oct 2012) received PR in July 2013? thats 9 months for total application?

Just telling you what other Inland applicants have been reporting. Perhaps your colleague was simply luckier than most, combined with a rock-solid application.
*shrug*

*edit* Perhaps that was before the CIC strike that seems to still have a ripple effect on processing times.

I know you gave the estimate from facts; in fact, I did remember him now say he had applied before the actual wedding (which was in Oct 2012) because he mentioned he didn't attach wedding pictures. Makes sense, got married in at a local notary and submitted application. It makes sense, you are right.

Make sure you understand that applying for OWP is ONLY for inland apps. There is no OWP associated with outland apps.

After AIP/stage 1 approval you can apply for OWP. Here are the current times being posted for AIP/stage 1 inland: http://www.cic.gc.ca/english/information/times/perm-fc.asp
As of today, they say:
9 months (initial assessment)
Working on applications received on April 29, 2013

A few months ago that was at 11 months, so they seem to be speeding things up again.
Then after AIP, it's another 8 months to PR approval.

With an outland app through CPP-Ottawa office, many people get their full PR in around 10 months time.

Canadian Civil Marriage (at a Canadian Notary) done last week, awaiting Certificate of Marriage be delivered by Mail

All documents prepared and ready to file In-Inland Sponsorship application for my Wife (GreenCard Holder) ... BUT

In IMM5443 (Sponsorship Checklist) requires:

For the applicant and his or her dependent children
1. Passport pages clearly showing your passport number, name, date of birth, passport issue/expiry dates and stamp made by a Canadian authority showing your most recent entry into Canada
2. Both sides of Unites States Alien Registration card (Green Card), if applicable

Upon land port entry to Canada (in February), the passport was NOT stamped (provided she holds a GreenCard / No Visa Required)

Question: by providing both copies of GreenCard, is it understood that she doesn't require an Entry Stamp? or do we have to go back to US cross again and request they stamp the Passport?
