Okay, I see what you mean. A long PR wait could get even longer!
I just read through their union website. There are some positions that have been declared essential (mostly managerial positions). The essential services seem to be related to natural disasters, war (hey maybe Kim Jong Eun might help things speed up!), etc. I would bet that immigration services is not essential. The union is recommending work to rule and cutting back for the regular non-essential services. To make matters worse this is a government that is anti-union. I don't like the direction this is going.

So ya a longer PR wait indeed.

some one please help me out !
I am trying to sponsor my korean wife to canada and it is been a big headache and hassle to get all the documents that canadian immigration required.
Currently we need to get ... Old (deleted) Family Census Register and one certified true translation into French or English. (btw, if your wife is unfamiliar with what this one is, the Korean translation is 제적등본 )

Does anyone know how or where to get this document ?
thank you very very very much for the infos.

My husband went to his local gu office to get all of the required household registry documents and then we took them to a law office that does translations. Your wife can request these documents at the gu office. (I'm assuming you are both in Korea right now).

I am going in the middle of June to Korea to be with my common-law for summer vacation. This is the second time I have gotten a bargain basement price through Honolulu. At Xmas, I got JFK from ICN for $780 return. As I am in Montreal getting to JFK is pretty easy. For this summer, there was nothing under $1650. I got a ticket from Honolulu to ICN routed through FUK (what a funny airport code ). The ticket was $450 return. I managed to get a ticket for $750 to HNL from Montreal. I will have to overnight, which I know adds to the cost. There are definitely worse places to overnight!

All this to say when looking for tickets, Honolulu could be a reasonably priced hub.

I'm going this June as well, and my roundtrip ticket Toronto to Seoul was $1300 total with Air Canada. Going there a quick stop-over in Vancouver, and coming home is direct flight (new from Air Canada). I'll gladly pay a little extra $$ if it means avoiding going through the US and having less transit time!

I am not sure why we get nailed coming from Montreal. I have never been able to get a decent price with Air Canada. I got myself a Nexus card and now can clear customs in the time it takes to get a coffee (and sometimes much faster!)

Maybe Rob_TO can give some insight into this question. I've posted it as well over on the Finance/Tax Issues forum.

Am I correct in assuming (I've read it elsewhere on the board) that a PR landing for the first time can bring all their belongings, household items, etc, into the country tax/duty free?

If that's correct, what happens if you enter Canada as visitor with those same goods, while waiting out your PR application?

Over the 8 years we've been married we've acquired the usual household stuff; fridge, stove , furniture etc. Some of it we'll sell but some of it we're shipping home. Those goods will no doubt arrive in Canada before her PR is approved. I understand that I will need to fill out the B4 forms listing all the goods we shipped, but will I have to pay anything when they arrive?

My wife's been researching companies for the past week. Seems there are a lot of companies who will quote you a price and then demand extra payment when the goods arrive in Canada. She's leaning towards a company called Hyundai International Shipping. There seem to be no complaints about them. She's going to ask them to come out and give us a quote this week.

We've been going through the house trying to figure out what to take and what to sell/throw away. We've acquired quite a lot of furniture over the years so we're thinking about renting a whole 20 foot container. Door to door that's going to cost us about 8,000,000 won. Pricey, but a lot of the stuff is kind of sentimental and we just don't want to part with it.

I hope so. Part of my problem is this. When I was dating my wife I was living in a beautiful, 29 pyong, brand new offictel in a great location. I was really happy living there. My wife was living with her mom in a six bedroom, 77 pyong two level villa. They'd lived there when my wife was growing up but her brothers and sisters had all since moved to the U.S. After we married my wife moved in with me, but her mom was in her seventies, a little forgetful and now living alone in this huge apartment. After a couple near disastrous cooking fires, my wife asked if we could move in with her mom. I reluctantly agreed and we've been here ever since.

When we leave next month her mom is moving permanently to the states to live with my wife's sisters and their kids. She doesn't want to take any of her furniture from this place with her. A lot of it is really expensive Korean antiques that my wife wants to bring with her and I'm reluctant to just leave out by the curb. Hence the need for a whole container.

I expect to know what all that is going to cost to move sometime next week. I'm guessing it will all fit in a container. I'll keep you posted.

I'd ship it too in that case. We have mostly gmarket stuff so a crate will be enough.

Employment: What are the chances of getting a job offer in Canada from Korea I wonder? How do you think an employer views teaching in Korea on a resume? How about for our Korean wives? How would they go about employment? I'm not totally lost with this, just wondering what you think, etc.
