Hi everyone,

I'm a Canadian citizen living in the US married to an american citizen. We are planning on relocating to Canada over the next couple of years and was wandering how to approach sponsoring her for Permanent Resident Status while still living down here. I've been reading all sorts of posts and unless I missed something, they involve sponsorship from a Canadian citizen who is living in Canada. My question is: how do I sponsor my wife into Canada if I am not currently living there? We have a US born 14 month old son who, through me, is automatically a Canadian citizen, so getting him back home won't be a problem...my concern is my wife. We would like to find a way for her to get the proper paperwork from here before moving back home. Thanks in advance for your feedback!

hi, "who is living inside Canada" is in reference to the applicant, not the sponsor. Really nothing you'll read hardly has anything to do with the sponsor unless you're filling out the sponsorship forms.

Since you're a Canadian citizen you can sponsor your wife no matter where you are living through an Outland application. You can find the forms here: http://www.cic.gc.ca/english/information/applications/fc.asp#immigrate

With your application package, be sure to include a plan of how you will establish yourself in Canada - some people include letters from parents who will take the family in until they are on their feet with a place of their own. Also, for your son, if you haven't already, you'll need to get his citizenship paperwork. CIC will want it included in the application.

To add to marlasinger's advice, note that CIC will want to see concrete plans to move to Canada in the near future. So if you don't plan on moving for a few years, hold off on sponsorship until it gets close to the time you wish to move.
