Hi there,

My marriage is arranged with a family friend's son in India. He will be here on student visa in September 2012 doing his masters for 2 years. He has applied for his program and is waiting for his acceptance. For now, its not sure that he will be here in Canada on student visa. Our parents have decided to get us married in January 2014 in India according to Hindu Rituals. My concern is that, he will be still studying at that time. He had earlier applied for student visa in Canada back in 2008 which was rejected then. I am worried if the government might think that this marriage is only done so that he can come to Canada for his PR.

There are 2 options if he comes here on student visa: Get engagement done. or both: get engagement and registered marriage done. We don't want to get married here according to Hindi rituals because our family members are back in India.

What would you suggest:
1. Get engagement and registered marriage done when he comes here on student visa and apply for his PR. This way it will help him reduce his tuition fee. OR
2. Get engagement and registered marriage done and wait until we get married according to Hindu Rituals...Basically applying for his PR after he completes his studies in 2014. OR
3. Just get engagement done and don't even do registered marriage. Just wait until 2014.

Also, what I have heard is that... I am a Canadian citizen and if my spouse is in the same country (Canada) and if I apply for his PR, then the processing time is going to be longer and if anything goes wrong, there won't be any chance of appeal.

And if he is in another country (India) at the time I apply for his PR. The processing time is going to be less and if anything goes wrong then there will be a chance of appeal.

Please help me clear out my confusion and please provide some suggestions. Thank you.

First and foremost as a Canadian, how do you feel about the arrangement? Are you entering into the relationship freely or not. If you are in full agreement with the arrangement then some thought can be put into your particular situation otherwise...
