my partner was diagnosed with borderline personality disorder, hes at no threat to himself or others and in treatment (therapy). he isnt on meds and doesnt plan to be. will this diagnosis halt me sponsoring him for PR? or get him declined with immigrations? also if he uses welfare to cover medical costs in the US despite having a job will that be detrimental to getting accepted to immigrate?

As long as he is a danger to others, it doesn't make him inadmissible.

His welfare wouldn't make him ineligible. However, with you being on disability and him having a mental illness that could affect his ability to work, you really need to show a strong financial plan on how you will support yourselves. He will not be able to claim welfare for 3 years if he becomes a PR.

strong financial plan like consistent paycheques? i can apply for permanent position at my job for that if it helps. if sporadic pay is not good enough. not sure if he will get a job here while coliving with me. but are main objective is saving for a cushion to fall on just in case.

Strong financials as in complete and comprehensive. He won't get welfare , may not be able to work and you are on disability, so you need to show how you will afford to live without government help (aside from your disability payments).

This is mere speculation but I would not be so med. averse. You may be listed as non-cooperative. This is not saying you will be but most borderlines in Canada are on Meds.

ok ill definitely have to apply permanent position then. ive read its possible to sponsor while just on disability and with no income, but it sounds like that and on-call income could get us denied.

People on disability usually need to show a financial plan. Some may already own a home so expenses are relatively low or have financial support from family if needed. A spouse of someone on disability may already have their own career and their own savings which is another way the couple can be approved. If you are now able to work full-time you really shouldn’t be on disability.
