Hello,

I am currently a Permanent resident of Canada. Just recently applied for my citizenship after completing 3 years in Canada.

I will be going to India next year to get married ..it will be only a court marriage. Would I be able to sponsor him once we get court married or would it be better for me to wait till I get officially married in the church. He lives in Dubai.

Also is it better if I wait till I get my Canadian Citizenship first, would I stand a better chance and a faster process.?

P.S I am currently a student, will graduate next year in April. Also curently have a part time job. Will be looking for full time work once I graduate

Awaiting your response.

Thank you

Not having your official marriage might cause immigration to question how genuine your relationship is. In Indian culture, so far as I understand, court marriages are not the rule, and so if you choose to go that route, you need to explain fully why you did.

Citizen or PR, there is no faster processing for the spouse of either. Each case is evaluated on its merits and the speed of that evaluation depends on the background of the application and the visa office you are going through, so it doesn't matter if the sponsor is a citizen or a PR.

Sponsoring a spouse has no minimum income requirement, you will not be disadvantaged because you are a student/working part-time. You only need to not be in receipt of social assistance except for disability, or bankrupt.

Congrats on your rd to your citizenship

As long as your marriage is valid in India it will be recognized here but please keep in mind tradition as if they find that you do not have the lavish wedding which is expected there is a greater chance of being called for an interview especially if your proof that you submit is lacking.

Being a citizen does not make your process any faster it does however allow you to be out of the country while your spouse is being sponsored, but as a PR you have to remain in Canada

Spousal sponsorship do not have income requirements but you do have to show how you intend to provide for your husband without being on welfare so if your husband has any skills that are transferrable please make note of that.

Hi, I am in a similar situation like yours. What did you decide? How did your application progress?

Thanks,
