I noticed that the sponsorship application asks if I have been charged with an offense punishable by a term of at least 10 years. If the answer to this question is "yes", does that prevent me from sponsoring my wife? It was an aggravated assault charge; I acted in self-defense against 5 men. The injury to one of them was severe enough that I was charged and after some "dead time" I plead guilty to get out of jail and did 5.5 months and got time-served. I was a heavy drinker and drug user then and since the crime I have rehabilitated myself - I am an abstainer and drug free for the last 3 years. This occurred about 3.5 years ago. There is also a break and enter on my record and a few breaches. All of these crimes were committed during a period of extreme drug and alcohol abuse. I have since transformed and am now an Area Sales Manager for a respectable Canadian company.

Can a moderator with legal expertise please advise me on whether this prevents me from sponsoring my wife?

Thanks in advance.

Does anyone know if they do criminal records checks on sponsors? If so, do they run these checks in Canada and the US. Just curious.
