Hi everyone,

PLEASE READ CAREFULLY BEFORE REPLYING.

My partner applied for permanent residency for the both of us. He is on welfare AND works. Will this affect our application. On the application we stated where he works and he pays taxes.

If anyone has been in a similar situation please let me know your story. What should we do, are we ok?

THANKS FOR YOUR HELP.

If he's on welfare then he doesn't qualify to sponsor you. The application will be refused. It doesn't matter that he is also working. The fact he is on welfare automatically disqualifies him from sponsoring. He needs to get off welfare and stay off welfare in order to sponsor you.

He can't sponsor someone if he is on welfare but applying for PR for himself + family is not the same as sponsoring someone.

Good catch Leon.

Is he applying for PR along with you? Or is he already a PR/citizien and is sponsoring you for PR?

This section of the forum is for PRs / Citizens who are sponsoring their family. If he falls into this category - then he doesn't qualify to sponsor.

If he himself is applying for PR - that's a different story. I would recommend that you post your question to the appropriate section of the forum (e.g. skilled worker, CEC, PNP) to get responses from those who have been in similar situations.

Hi Guys,

Yes he is apply for PR himself and is adding me to the application. This is his FIRST application for PR (whish he qualifies for) and my name is being added to the application.

Does the fact that he's on welfare matter.

Thanks

I don't think so, as long as the requirements of his PR application are fulfilled. There could be other points with his application though like the question why he is on welfare as well as working. If he is making so little money with his job that he qualifies for welfare as well, immigration may question if the job offer is genuine or if he really is working in a skilled position.

How can he be in Canada, on welfare but working and not already be a PR?

He could be a protected person/convention refugee who is collecting welfare but working on the side.

Right. I never thought of that. Thanks. He would be working but subsidized by welfare or EI?

We need more information, as can be seen be the speculation in the replies.
1. Where are you two right now?
2. What country are you citizens of?
3. What type of PR did your husband apply for?
4. What kind of job does he have?
5. What country is giving him welfare?
