Job Offer........
Pre-Assessed..
Hi all,

I am a US citizen living in Canada with my boyfriend. On the 7th, we will officially be Common Law and want to apply for PR soon.

My bf is thinking of leaving his current job to pursue a business for a while. He has 50k in savings in the bank to support us in the meantime. If we submit our PR app and he doesn't have a job, is this going to cause issues in the eyes of CIC? Will he still be able to sponsor me?

We don't have many expenses and live frugally, so we definitely won't have any issues supporting ourselves. And if the business plan doesn't work out, we'll have more than enough time to secure jobs again. I was thinking we could just explain all this to CIC in a letter when we submit our application.

I don't want to be called for an interview or make our process any harder.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks so much!

None of that isn't necessary (explanation about job) as long as he's not on welfare or has an Undischarged bankruptcy he's fine a job isn't a requirement for spousal sponsorship

Awesome, thanks, impatientwife! That makes us feel a lot better.

So you don't think it will be more likely to trigger an interview or anything? I was kind of thinking once he's accepted as a sponsor, that will pretty much mean that it's cleared up in the eyes of CIC and so it won't really affect the rest of the app anyway.

You will not be called for an interview.

Though there is no minimum income requirement for spousal sponsorship, you need to show that you will be able to support yourselves in Canada without welfare. This can be shown with savings, investments, your income, his income, family assistance etc.

Thanks, canuck! So will a statement showing his savings be enough to satisfy that requirement? I assume so since I know it's definitely enough for us to live on for quite a bit. We can also provide a letter with our future plans if necessary.

I appreciate the help!

Yes, that will be fine.

Great, thank you again! Also, one more question if you have the time. I will be applying for a visitor extension, soon. Do you think they'll deny my extension due to the recent job leave or is it basically just the same deal where if we provide the bank statement it should suffice?

You don't even need to mention the job. Just include the bank statements.

Interesting...because when I applied, I included a bank statement to show ties / intention to return to Canada and the amount in my account was a big fat ZERO. Although I had steady work up to about 8 months before submitting our application and had explained that I had taken time off to work on our application. I don't think I showed them any savings or income whatsoever...although I guess my Schedule C report for my income tax did show income...so they must have "deduced" that I was capable of earning a living...

ha ha ha...

Ah, okay. Well, that certainly eases our worries for that. I was just thinking that we'd need to because there'd be a section on the extension app about his current and past jobs. Thinking back on my last extension app, I'm not sure I remember such a thing, though. Maybe that was just for the applicant, not the person saying they'll support them.

Thank you again!

Haha, well I'm glad that they didn't give you a hard time on it! And it shows things can go simply sometimes, which also makes me feel a bit more at ease about the process. Thanks for sharing.
