I'm 20 years old and live in the UK. My sister and her partner are moving to Alberta as he has secured a job there. My question is can she sponsor me and would I be able to get an open work permit if she can. My sisters partner has agreed to support me financially and I would be living with them. I've been researching so much and can't get a straight answer. If she isn't able to sponsor me, do you have any ideas on how I can move there and work? Thank you

No - she can't sponsor you. If you wish to immigrate to Canada you will have to do so independently.

Adding... You should check out the working holiday visa program (IEC) if you want to work in Canada.

Cheers for the reply so fast! I rang a Canadian immigration helpline and they said she would be able to sponsor me, so I don't understand.
I've looked at the IEC and it says that it's closed for the UK (?)
Any idea how I would be able to get an open work permit also? Thank you

Is your sister or her partner a Canadian Citizen or PR?

Well then, your sister should be able to sponsor you once she's a PR.

How exactly? I don't think you understand the sponsorship rules relating to siblings. Sponsorship would only be possible if her sister had no partner (i.e. was single). She would also have to have no children, deceased parents, and no other relatives in Canada.

That is completely wrong.

In general you can't sponsor siblings. Only in rare cases where the PR has no spouse/kids/family in CAnada, and parents are deceased... can you sponsor a sibling.

Some provinces have Provincial Nominee programs under which people can help family members immigrate. But that depends on the province and what programs they have open. http://www.cic.gc.ca/english/immigrate/provincial/apply-who.asp

Yep, I misread it, sorry Re94, but take a closer look at this http://www.cic.gc.ca/english/immigrate/sponsor/relatives-apply-who.asp

So my sister isn't able to sponsor me? Are there any other ways of getting an open work permit?
I'm able to live in Canada for 6 months with no visa, but I won't be able to work without applying for a work permit after getting a job offer??
Anyone know if there's a simpler way to do this or is everything extremely complicated? Thanks

What do you do for a living, maybe you can try Experience Class?

You need to have a minimum of one year of work experience in Canada in order to qualify for Experience Class (so that obviously won't work for the OP). Also, you can no longer apply for Experience Class directly, you must apply through Express Entry.
