If your case is straight forward, that is, this is your first marriage, no kids, first sponsoring someone, you have proof that marriage is genuine such as photos of marriage ceremony, reception, honey moon etc. and you have proof of communication such as log of e-mails, chats etc. then you don't need a lawyer. It is an application. Not a hearing. You can fill out the application yourself.

I took a lawyer and now I feel, I could have saved the money.

If you read this forum enough then you will get all information you need.

Good Luck.

I agree. If your case is straight forward I wouldn't bother hiring any help. Filling out the application and gathering all the docs take some time of course, but you can do it yourself too. :) If I was able to do it, so are you. ;)

just carefully read the forms, fill them out, reads the posts on this forum from others who needed help, ask questions if you still need to ... if your case is stratightforward then you don't need the consultant. In straight forward cases, they will help you fill in the forms and thats it. they can't help expedite the case in any other way, nor guarantee any result. the forms are available online for anyone, so you can have a look at it yourself and then judge whether you need someone's help to fill them in or not.

however, if there any red flags that you can think of, then consluting with a lawyer to make sure that all the red flags are dealt with (not just ignored) would be a good idea.

I would definately hire a Consultant.

They SOMETIMES provide information that you will not find on websites such as this one (as good as it is) and you certainly wont find it on offical government sites.

Unfortunately, theory and reality are sometimes very different

My Consultants told me what was going to happen and they were right. It helped ease the pain a lot.

It also depends on your level of english. If you will find it difficult to understand exactly what is being asked on the forms, or explaining your answers and situation in an easy to understand way to the VO... a consultant may be a good choice.

Of if you don't want to spend the money on full-service consultant, I know some of them will just do the final check for you. After you have completed the application on your own they will review everything and advise on errors or give suggestions to improve it.

Also remember in general, you get what you pay for. If you just go with the cheapest consultant and don't get referrals, there's a chance they will not be very useful and could end up causing unnecessary delays for you.

For full service in helping you do the application, they can cost anywhere from around $2000-$3000.

To simply do a final check of your application for errors and recommendations, when i checked the prices they were from $500-$1000 for this.

Prices probably vary by country. In the end i just did it all myself!

We are both living in Toronto, so we got all our Korean docs translated to english here.

If you are in Korea now, sorry but I have no idea where to get translations done. There should be many places though, you just need to search in the phone directory or online for translation services.

Also since you are actually a citizen of another country, depending on what language the required documents from your home country are in (like for police report), you may need additional translations other than Korean.

According to the guide: http://www.cic.gc.ca/english/information/applications/guides/3900ETOC.asp
Any document that is not in English or French must be accompanied by:
- the English or French translation; and
- an affidavit from the person who completed the translation; and
- a certified copy of the original document.

So you will need these 3 things. If you call to the translation services companies in your area, also see if they can do a simple certified/notarized "true copy" of your ID card along with the translation, so you can do everything at just 1 place.
