My friend, who got his PR card almost 7 years ago,and for his first five- year period,he only lived in Canada for 2 months so he failed on renew his pr card, then he appealed and the immigration court will arrange a date to deal with his case, meanwhile ,cic gave him a 1- year expiration PR card .And this PR card will expire next month. Now he has two chioces, one is give up his P R right now,and apply for 10 year visitor visa, since his wife and son are both in Canada,he needs to visit Canada.and when he can live in Canada, apply for the family sponsorship ,the second choice is waiting for the court, and before that he can only use his landing paper to enter Canada.
Can anyone pls give him some advice?which way is better.

Does he know there is no guarantee the visit visa will be approved if he gives up his PR status?

Yes,you are right, and he is thinking maybe he could extend his 1 year PR card cause the PR card is issued to him to allow him to enter or stay in Canada to attend the appeal hearing. But don't know how,any forms?cannot find on CIC website.

If he gives up his PR status, can't his wife (who lives in Canada ) sponsor him for spousal sponsorship and then get a new PR card?
