Well, I'm sure I'll be called many unflattering terms, 'flake' comes to mind. Well, call me a starry eyed romantic, but I've fallen completely in love, based on a two month online and skype correspondence with a girl in Mexico. We both feel the same way and have become engaged and intend to marry when she arrives here. We're also both not very close with our families, don't have a huge amount of money to go on 'honey moons', aren't religious and don't care for a big ceremony, and aren't even particularly outgoing or sentimental to care about 'taking photos in front of things.' I totally would understand a Visa officer looking at this situation and wanting to simply reject it off hand. The evidence we have is limited to a huge amount of emails and text messages. I'm dreading what this might mean for us though and seeing the potential of a rejection and being separated for huge periods of time, which would be awful. We'll get married regardless, but I feel like no matter what application we put together, it will be rejected simply on the grounds of the short duration of the relationship and the fact we don't do conventional 'couple' things like 'meet the parents' and 'honeymoons' and 'pictures together.' If anyone has any experience from being in a similar situation I would love to hear what your experience was like and/or how you navigated around these issues.

Hello,

I would not rush into it. Take your time and build your relationship. I fell in the same situation..but I actually gave up my life in Canada and moved to Mexico about 2 years ago, married the man of my dreams and we have been married now for just over 6 months. You can definately try the application, but the application does ask questions about meeting family, etc etc. I think you will have a hard time proving that your relationship is genuine. I would recommend not to rush into applying. Why not get married, live together for awhile if you can, build your relationship a bit more then apply

Just my opinion

Cheers!

xprs - getting married soon after the first face-to-face meeting is a HUGE RED FLAG to CIC. And you can multiply that ten fold if the applicant is from a non-visa-exempt country. You have other huge red flags on top of that.

I'd take countrygal's advice and take it slow

Thanks for the advice, both of you two. I've read some of your posts on other threads and have appreciated the knowledge youve shared here.

I think the urgency is that we don't have a lot of money to be making multiple short trips back and forth over the span of several years, not to mention that such a relationship isn't much of a relationship when it boils down to it. It's difficult to have a life with a person if you are relying on travel visas which may be only issued for as long as 2 weeks at a time depending upon the subjective discretion of an IO. Right now for instance we are grappling with the difficulty in trying to find a means for her to be issued a 6 month visa so that we can at least have a few months together prior to going forward with all of this. It's kind of a double bind. Without permanent residency/marriage, its difficult to be able to have enough time together to establish the conditions of having a real longterm relationship to provide proof to obtain the permanent residency. Or maybe obtaining 6 month visas isn't as hard as I've read it can be? In any event, it might be quite boring for my partner to be in Canada without being allowed to work, for long stretches at a time. I suppose I can always cross my fingers and hope Justin Trudeau is elected, I noticed just two days ago his pledge to make permanent residency immediate to anyone applying through spousal sponsorship..

So you haven't met in person at all? I'd suggest visiting her there, it's pretty cheap to stay in Mexico. Keep in mind things are always a bit different once you meet in person. Committing for life on the first meeting might work out, but I highly suggest meeting in person a couple times. If it's true love, a bit of a wait is not going to hurt your relationship.

That is not what he's saying... he's saying he will do away with the "conditional" PR status, and when people qualify for PR they will simply become full PRs immediately. The wait time and due diligence to make sure a relationship is real first, will still be there.

I would definitely not even think of applying after just a 2 months online relationship and then a quick wedding on the first meeting. CIC will almost certainly fee that your spouse is just using you to get status in Canada (not saying that's the case, it's just what they will think). You need to spend time in person first, the more time the better.

Hi! My husband and I met online June 2014, met in person August 2014, got married October 2014, I moved in November 2014, put our application in March 2015, got my COPR in August 2015, and I landed in September 2015. It is possible! Good luck!

P.S. We only had like 14 pics, 4 of which were from us eloping at a courthouse with no family present. Just me and him, and witnesses that worked in the courthouse. We had June - November Skype logs, but no calls / text histories that we sent in.

It is possible. Good luck!

Huge, huge difference between a US citizen being sponsored with a quick relationship, vs a Mexican citizen (or as mentioned above, anyone who is not visa-exempt).

That is true, but I have seen people with my same timeline from non visa-exempt countries get approved like we have.

The cost of the application and medical before applying is something else you will need money for. I know it's hard to wait, but lots of us have been through this, and going through it. I met my husband online playing a game in 2012. We are married now and yes it's expensive to travel back and forth and we use skype every night and text all day and are just now mailing our application this week. Maybe start with the FBI check, that takes time, then start completing the application, you will be surprised how much time it takes to get everything needed. In the meantime realize most people get closer when faced with difficulty. I am happy you found each other and wish you the best.

That's because your case involves a US citizen, and the US being probably the easiest country be sponsored from. The OP really needs to take the relationship slowly, not only for his own benefit to see if his fiance really loves him or not, but also to minimize the red flags on his application.

Otherwise his application will be refused, and he will have to go through the appeals process, etc, which will take a few years, which will put further strain on their relationship.

XPRS I'd hate to say it, but your application as it stands, has 0% chance of succeeding. For your own benefit, you should really try to get to know this girl better, meet her family, at least have your family get to meet her or even webcam, etc. You will benefit in both ways: knowing she's not after you for PR, and your PR application will be stronger.

And also, even if Justin Trudeau is elected, you will still have a 0% chance. Regardless of the party elected, all spousal applications have to show a genuine relationship.

Don't take what I've said personally at all, I'm really honestly trying to help you out.

I've met my hubby online when I resigned from my work in UAE.That was last may2014.First time he visited me in September 2014and we got married last October 4, 2014.It was a short relationship yes but it's genuine one.And yes , short relationship might have red flags with the visa officer but as long as you showed all the proofs to convince them about the genuineness of the relationship, you'll be approve in god's time. I'm now just waiting for Decision made..In process last September 5.. goodluck!

At least your long timeline helps you. You've been in the relationship for 5 years and married for over 2 years before applying. You have a strong history together. That is a big plus.
