I'm a Canadian citizen and my wife just got her permanent visa so we're moving back to Canada next month. The problem is we're going to live in Edmonton but the shipping company tells us that we have to sign for our stuff in person from customs in Vancouver. Has anyone shipped household stuff from abroad know if this is true? It would be much easier if we didn't have to go back out to Vancouver once the stuff arrives.

Hi, I have no definite answer, but I should think that any CBSA office would be able to clear your paperwork and then contact the shipping company, not just the one in Vancouver.
I think there is a CBSA office in Edmonton so maybe you could call them and see if they can clear your paperwork for you.

I'm not sure about shipping, but I had looked into a moving company moving ours and they required us to goto a specific office to 'untape' and officially check in our goods. For us, we are headed to London - they wanted us to goto Hamilton, do the sign-off and then theyd' head back to London with our goods. So it added a few hours to the trip.

When my wife moved from Edmonton to live with me in England, the shipping company we used cleared her items at customs for her and delivered to the door.

Granted, these were mainly clothes/picture frames etc, no major objects or appliances etc from her home as these have stayed in storage awaiting our return.

We are hoping that the principle will be the same in return.

I'm sure there must be larger removal firms who will deliver to door and handle the customs themselves...
