Hi Guys..good afternoon..Just saw this on the immigration blog...

anadian government may reduce immigration numbers

parentsCanadian immigration processing times are increasing as a backlog of applications is building up at visa offices. Minister of Citizenship, Immigration and Multiculturalism Jason Kenney suggested that a simple solution may exist – decrease the number of applications Canada accepts from people wanting to join their families in Canada.

Since 2006, Canada has accepted approximately 254,000 immigrants annual, but there are over one million people still waiting to be assessed. Kenney said in a recent statement that part of the problem facing Canadian immigration officials is that Canada has a good reputation as a land of opportunity, making Canada a popular destination for immigrants. Another problem is based on a system that the Liberal party had set up wherein an unlimited number of applications were accepted per year.

Rather than accept an unlimited number of applications, Kenney suggested that the backlog problem can be resolved by decreasing the number of applications accepted and increasing the number of applications that are approved each year.

“It will have to be a combination of both, because the volume (of applications) is so great,” the Minister told reporters. “Last year we received 38,000 applications for parents and grandparents. And this is at time when we’re trying to reduce the overall age of the population,” he said, hinting that the family category may see a decline in the number of applications accepted.

Under Canada’s Family Class Sponsorship Program, Canadian Permanent Residents living in Canada and citizens can sponsor members of their family for Canadian Permanent Residency. However, Canada is experiencing a large backlog of applications, specifically in the parental and grandparent sponsorship category.

Not everyone agrees with Kenney. NDP MP Don Davies said Kenney’s statement is contrary to his party’s behaviour. “Every single year since this government’s been in power, they have reduced the number of visas granted to parents, spouses, children and grandparents,” Davies said. “They always talk about Canada having the most generous immigration policy in the world per capita… It’s a fool’s game to compare Canada that way.”

This is soooooo not surprising, hence why the processing times are going up every week. Sorry to get on the political wagon again, but it is a known fact that the conservative government would do this, they have always wanted to, but now that they have majority they are actually going through with it. Sit tight everyone, it will be a test of our patience... and we dont even have it that bad, imagine those poor people wanting to bring their parents, they have to wait 10 YEARS...

Family Class immigration is secondary to them, and though I may understand some of their reasoning, it is very hard to stay neutral when is your life they are affecting, I think of all the couples being separated, the fiancial burden, everything we go through to be together, and to them we are just another number...

I will write to Minister Kenny, because I voted, and I have the right to be heard, even if I didnt vote conservative. Unfortunately I know that it wont matter in the long run until next election. Those of you who can vote, please do so, specially if you dont feel represented by the current governments ideas, or even if you do, inform yourself and vote, at least we still live in a society were our opinions can be said outloud.

Anyway, it feels good to vent. Be strong everyone, like we keep saying, love will prevail and you will be together again with your loved one.

have a good weekend everyone.

*checking in*

I'm Indigo, 32 years old female from The Netherlands, recently got married to the love of my life, who is a Canadian. I am currently staying with my husband in Canada and hope to be able to wait out the decision on my application here. These are my dates so far:

Medical: 26-08-2011
App sent: 21-09-2011
App received: 22-09-2011

I'd love to post it under my avatar like some others did but I can't figure out how that works yet. I can't even figure out how to have an avatar yet! Perhaps I need to have a certain # of posts to be allowed to do this?

Edit: Forgot to tell: After sponsorship approval stage in Mississauga, my application will be processed in Berlin, Germany because that's the visa office for outland applications for people from The Netherlands. And I would like to be part of your awesome spreadsheet, leroadrunner and Kedeisha!

Thanks, I noticed the spreadsheet after I posted and I edited my post to make sure you have what you need to add me to it! I think a spreadsheet is a great idea. I was delighted to see one fellow applicant through Berlin, and one person who listed application received on the same day as I did.
It feels so nice to know that everybody in this topic is going through more or less the same thing. Though I guess I am fortunate to be with my husband...

Well I have been a Canadian citizen for over 30 years and I feel that is the right thing to do... 10 years is a good amount of time. you bring your parents or grand parents which are old so they cant work so they will have to get OAS and welfare which I think is crazy.
I personally think you shouldn't immigrant to canada if your over the age of 55 because there isn't anything you can give to the country. the only thing is that you will be taking and killing the tax payers.

Now now, killing the tax payer? Aren't you exaggerating a bit?

I partially agree with you though. If you immigrate to canada, that shouldn't mean that you automatically have a right to bring your parents and grandparents. Of course in Canada they will spend money they've made over the years in their home country, but they will also eventually have health problems which can become costly and will be covered by Canada, and the two usually don't balance out. A sad truth.

Although my immigration to Canada (family class, spouse) for me means that I'll have to accept that my parents, cousins, nieces, nefues etc live on a different continent, I can imagine there are situations in which this would simply not be feasable. After all not everybody is me. In those cases, 10+ year waiting time will often mean the parents/grandparents will see a coffin earlier than a PR card! It requires in-depth research and a firm, but fair hand to decide on changes in the parent/grandparent category. It is a delicate subject, but something has to happen.
