Separate forms to become a sponsor?

Hello,

My wife and I are about to begin the sponsorship process. She is going to sponsor me to come live in Canada (Toronto,ON). I am from the US.

I was reading the CIC website today and it states "First, your family member who is a citizen or permanent resident of Canada must apply to be a sponsor and then be approved. When your sponsor receives positive results from her/his sponsorship assessment, you have one year to complete the forms and gather all the required documents. You should send them as soon as possible to the appropriate visa office."

Does it mean these forms IMM-5481E, IMM-5540E, IMM-1344E?

If so I was under the impression that we submit these forms at the same time as my forms (IMM-0008, IMM-5285E,IMM-5406E, IMM-5669E).

Or is there another set of forms we need to complete first for my wife to be able to be a sponsor?

Any help on this is greatly appreciated!

Thank You

Hmmm...perhaps CIC is changing the way the processing applications?

It has always been one complete package that gets sent together:

Sponsor's form and required documents

Applicant's forms and required documents

Evidence of your Relationship

So, unless they HAVE changed things...

Sit tight and wait for others to weigh in on this one!

Hi

That quote is found in the guide for "Sponsorship of parents, grandparents, adopted children and other relatives". It is not relevant to spousal sponsorship.

Make sure that you are looking at the correct guides and forms for spousal sponsorship, found here http://www.cic.gc.ca/english/information/applications/fc.asp.

ALL forms, both sponsor and applicant, MUST be sent together to Mississauga.

Since the following is still on CIC's website (as part of the instruction Guide (3999) for sponsorship), you must have found incorrect information...somewhere:

How long do I have to complete the application and submit it?

You should complete the forms and return them as soon as possible to your sponsor, along with all supporting documentation.

Note: Your sponsor cannot submit the sponsorship forms until he or she receives your application.

Thank you for clearing that up for me!

We have completed:

Sponsor:
IMM-5481E
IMM-5540E
IMM-1344E

Applicant:
IMM-0008
IMM-5285E
IMM-5406E
IMM-5669E

I believe these are the only forms we need to fill out because neither of us have any children.

We have also...Payed the fees, gathered evidence of our relationship,FBI check, medical exam, and gathered all the supporting documents such as (passports, marriage certificate...etc ).

Is there anything I am missing?

Thanks again!

The form IMM5285 is an inland form. DO NOT APPLY INLAND!!!!!! APPLY OUTLAND!!!!! There is absolutely no reason for an American citizen to apply inland unless you really want to end up hating life for the next few years. There are several people right now in the process of withdrawing their inland apps and re-applying outland.

You can apply outland even if you are in Canada. American apps are processed in Ottawa and are going through in around 6 months right now, some even less than that. Inland is currently taking at least 14 months just for first stage approval, with another 8 months after that to become a PR.

The link that I previously posted is for the outland application package.

One more time, DON'T APPLY INLAND.

I wasn't aware that was a form for inland >.< We had planned on applying Outland. Thank you for informing me that I was filling out the wrong form.

A quick side question... Once we submit all our forms and begin the sponsorship process am I able to travel to the US to visit my family? or will I have issues getting back into Canada?

There are never any guarantees that a person will be admitted (or re-admitted) into Canada, but if for some reason you are denied, your Outland application would continue to be processed...unlike an Inland applicant.

as long as you don't act like you are "living" or "moving" to canada, and you always refer your trip as a "visit", it is very rare for pr applicants to get denied at the border. it's recommended to carry a copy of your application, fees paid, medical receipt and proof of ties to the US (housing and job info). CIC's main concern is you understand you are a visitor, and still have someplace/thing to go back to at the end of your visit. once you receive SA, your application will be in their system, they will confirm it's been submitted and let you on your way..

The apps are similar but do have some big differences. Just follow the link I posted, that is the outland app package. IMM 5491, under Part 1, and IMM 3910, under Part 3, are the 2 checklists that an outland American applicant must follow.
