Hello everyone,
I am currently facing a challenging situation and would greatly appreciate any guidance or advice.
My Permanent Residence (PR) application under the Atlantic Immigration Program (AIP) is in process, and I have already completed my biometrics. Recently, I applied for an extension of my work permit under the AIP stream, but unfortunately, it was refused. As a result, I lost my job because I no longer have status in Canada.
I have since reapplied for a work permit extension, but until a decision is made, I cannot legally work.
In the meantime, I would like to know:
Am I eligible for Employment Insurance (EI) benefits under these circumstances?
If yes, what steps do I need to take to apply and receive these benefits?
I understand that EI typically supports individuals who have lost their jobs through no fault of their own, but I am unsure how my current situation with my work permit status might impact my eligibility.
