How many people actually look at the SSL certificate to confirm that it's authentic (or even the URL to make sure it isn't something similar but not identical like ScötiaBank.com)/

It is important to be cautious since there are so many scams out there. But if the URL is correct and the SSL certificate is validated (and this should be a high security SSL certificate - showing a green bar in IE and green site name in Firefox and Chrome, not sure what Safari or Opera do) then the site should be genuine.
