Given today's processing times its more like a 5 to 7 year wait to become a citizen already for people who qualify at the first opportunity (during which you must maintain your PR status). Government claims they will reduce processing times to under a year, so it will be a 5 year wait for those who qualify at first opportunity under the new legislation. Of course, the devil is in the details of how they will reduce the processing time. Many here say it is by reducing the volume of applications by lengthening the qualifying period for many who would otherwise qualify based on time in Canada prior to obtaining PR status. Some will suffer so the government can claim it has "strengthened the value of Canadian citizenship" all while reducing or at the very least holding processing times steady. Whether or not they can actually accomplish this remains to be seen.

Why this premise? I don't know any other country that allows to apply and subsequently hands out citizenships only 3 years after stepping one's foot on the ground.

In my opinion, worse that non-PR time won't count towards residence anymore-- a strike on work and study permit holders.

Right, we need a better line of attack than the four year requirement.

Yes, that won't fly because Canada is probably the last country left with such a short qualifying period for general naturalization.

But causing more hurdles to people who are already working in Canada or have a Canadian degree doesn't make much sense, or does it??

There's another suggestion

We must contact our MPs and record our protest that we don't want this 4 years compulsion. If there is no opposition to this bill, it will take lesser time to become law.

Guys.....plz. send emails or call your local MPs. We are their potential voters

I would suggest the act to be changed like "anyone who will get the good 1095 within 2014 is not subject to the new law" -- I think this way is fair but that's just my "thinking." I guess CIC wants a break to get rid of the 300K backlog.

You seem to forget that the Conservative party has majority in Ottawa...the bill will pass anyway, regardless of complaints or letters to MP's. What we have to do is to remember what the Cons have done when we get to vote in federal elections, surprisingly many immigrants vote for the Cons.

Please add "intend to reside" on the first page of the Petition. You add only one problem (pre- PR) but there are many other problems.

i dont see how is it fair to anyone, not just international students and foreign workers, if they pass this bill and implement this for end of this year, i will have 1095 days on jan 4th, so which makes short by 4 days by end of this yr and just fot that i need to wait a whole year?. i have been living in canada from 2000 as international student and then work permit. finally got my pr in 2008, but die to family emergency then i had to leave for 2 and half yrs, and came back and now after been living soo long, now we dont even qualify. How unfair is that, i already lost the 1 yr prior to getting PR coz i was away and now another year for rule change. This is NONSENSE
