Hi, I share here what happened to my husband this weekend.
He worked from 2011-2012 but his LMO was about to expire this December. His company applied for an new LMO, same job except a higher salary. He received his positive LMO beginning of Dec2012.
To extend his Work Permit online it would have taken too long and he didn't want to keep working on implied status cause also his Health Insurance and SIN would have expired by the end of this month.
So first he wanted to get on vacation like LA or so and obtain his Work Permit when coming back in to Canada at the airport. (he is from an visa-exempt country)
Thinking about it he wanted to save some money and time and decided to drive to the US Border and flagpole at Sweetgrass, the border to Montana. (he did call cic before though and they suggested that this would be ok to do so)
It was an 6 hour drive by good weather condition and he got there later in the evening. He drove up to the US entry and got asked why he is here and where he wants to go. He answered that he wants to get his WP extension at the Canadian Immigration. The officer then asked him to park behind the building and to come inside. He checked the passport and after 10min asked him to drive around and see the Canadian Immigration Officer. He also got an Papers saying "entry denied to US".
he "flagpoled" and and went up to the desk. The immigration officer was not happy and asked him WHY HE DID NOT apply online or send papers to Vegreville. He said that this would not be the proper way to do it and he could be sent home right now. He was lecturing him about the craziness of driving this way and risking to get denied back into Canada. He also mentioned to normally not deal with him in this case but he would be lucky because it wasn't busy at all. He pretty much made him sweat over an hour and finally issued him his Work permit extension.
My husband was really lucky and his case wasn't very complicated like changing employers or job changes... they were not busy... his english is very good.... he was polite .....
But guys, think about it twice to do it. I read a post where someone had no problems at all but u do risk to get denied back in or even get into bigger problems. Once there, u have to really be lucky.
Plan ahead to get your LMO, apply online and wait until u get your papers
