Right after sending application in, go to Canada with one way ticket?

My Canadian husband will be here next week to stay two weeks and we will mail the Outland package by courier while he is here.

He has had some test for his health and we worry the results may require serious surgery. Hopefully not, but we want me to be in Canada with him during recovery or while he continues to have health issues until they are resolved. He is 47, I am 57. Even if his health turns out to not be caused by anything serious, and can be treated with medicine versus surgery, we planned for me to go in mid December and stay 5 months as I have someone who has agreed to live in my house while I am gone. Then I hoped to come back to US for a few months and by then have PR approved, sell house and move. We have been traveling back and forth for a few weeks at a time for 3 years up until now. He is employed and I am retired.

Is it ok to buy a one way ticket? I really am returning to the US but last time I went to visit him for the usual 5 weeks my house was burglarized so I am very aware that anything can happen and I could need to return to my house before we planned.

As always, thank you for your advice.

Also, if my husband is seriously ill I would of course try to stay with him longer, and I suppose that is where I would have to learn how to request permission to extend my stay as a tourist on a US passport.

If I am better off buying a round trip ticket, just say and I will. I always tell the truth at the border, and have been treated kindly every time.

Thank you.

I suggest you purchase a fully refundable return ticket. This seems to please most CBSA officers. ;)

Sorry to hear about your husband's health challenges.
