Sample timeline (100% live in Canada):
  • Jan 2020 - Arrived Canada as a visitor
  • Sep 2020 - Submitted in-Canada application for protection
  • Oct 2020 - Attended IRCC eligibility interview and submitted passport
  • Jan 2021 - Refugee Protection Claimant Document was issued and received, along with work permit and IFHP coverage
  • Apr 2021 - Hearing/Interview passed and became Protected Person
  • Mar 2023 - Became PR
Is my understanding correct that for citizenship residency calculation, Jan 2020 to Jan 2021 will be considered as 0.5 days per day, Jan 2021 to Apr 2021 will be considered as 0 days, and Apr 2021 to Mar 2023 will again be considered as 0.5 days?
Thanks

To the best of my knowledge, only Jan 2020 to Sept 2020 will be considered (not Jan 2020 to Jan 2021). Yes, April 2021 to March 2023 will be considered. Keep in mind that you can only claim 1 year of pre-PR time towards citizenship (meaning a total of 2 years at 0.5 credit per day). 2 years out of the 3 must be post-PR.

I thought it would stop counting on the day you were officially considered as a claimant, in my example, wouldn't IRCC need to at least determine that eligibility in the eligibility interview in Oct 2020?

Also let's just say Sep 2020 is the cutoff date, and I assume there is a 5-year look back period, correct?

Assuming that this person is going to stay in Canada for the next two years (post PR), is my calculation below correct that he will be eligible for citizenship in March 2025?

Mar 2020 to Sep 2020 = 6 mth
Arp 2021 to Mar 2023 = 23 mth
So the pre PR time is min (24mth/2, 29mth/2) = 1 yr

And the post PR time is 2 yr.

1+2 =3.

From the claiming day till the date on your notice of decision is zero days, before and after are 0.5 days, after pr its full day.

Thank you for reply

as per my understanding after reading your link and above shared Image

#1) Canada entry date to refugee claim date will be counted as 0.5 days ( visitor Days )
#2) Claimant date to Positive Decision date - No counting
#3) Positive Decision to COPR date - will be counted as 0.5 days
#4) PR Days - Will be counted as Full 1 Day

if I am wrong please let me know

Thank you so much

as per what I understood
you entered Canada Jan 2020 to claimant Sep 2020 = around 8 Months x 0.5 days = 4 months
Claimant to positive decision = 0 counting
Positive Decision to COPR = April 21 to March 23 = 24 Months x 0.5 Days = 12 months
even you have 12 + 4 Months but still you max out your previous days counting as Max cap is 12 Months
PR to 2 year = in March 2025 you will be qualified for citizenship

Please correct me if I am wrong.

Thank you all for valuable inputs
