Reset (or extend the tourist visa) just by going to USA and back

Hi everybody,

Here I am again. I was just at the phone with an IRCC Call Centre Agent to clarify some details about my tourist visa extension and she told me that I could always go to US by car and get back to Canada in order to have an extension of my tourist visa.

I am from Italy and she said that I could do this no problem. I precise that she was pretty sure of herself, but I keep doubting that this is actually doable as USA is not my country of citizenship. My country of citizenship is Italy. Maybe is a new thing for EU citizens only?
Why did she even suggest this when it is not written or shown as an option anywhere in the cic.gc.ca website? Isn’t she supposed to know the rules better than anybody else?

Please, provide some advices if you can. I am also thinking about going to ask about this option personally at one of the CBSA office in Vancouver.

It may work, it may not. It's entirely up to the CBSA officer you encounter. He/she may give you six months, they may just consider it a re-entry from the US on the original, they may give you a week or they may refuse you entry if they think you are living i Canada and not a visitor.

I'd just apply for an extension. Way less headaches

Wow, the agent at the phone made it sound like a smooth procedure…
I am considering the option just because it is faster than the application which takes approx 115 days and at that point I will be missing the chance to change the date of my departure flight (which must be done at least 24 hours before).

My Tourist visa expires on Nov 4th
My flight was scheduled for Oct. 19th

You will be on implied status after you apply. You don't have to wait for a decision on your application to extend your stay. You can leave before that

And it's not like you have to get out of canada the next morning if you are refused. You can also apply for restoration after a refusal of you extension.
