They will take off the cast, do an x-ray to make sure the bone is straight and healed properly and then a quick check-up for things like numbness, range of motion, etc Any local fracture clinic will be fine.

I was reading the replies and I learned insurance companies dont cover pre existing conditions. I have a dependent child who is being sponsored that has Asthma. Would they cover for emergency visits for example?

Once again, no insurance company will cover these charges. It's a pre-existing condition that you would be guaranteed to make a claim on. All of these costs you'll need to pay out of pocket when in Canada and during the waiting period for healthcare.

Pre-existing conditions are very particular in what is and isn't covered. In some cases if the pre-existing condition is fully controlled, with no changes for past several months in medication dosage, and no emergency incidents for some time, then there's a chance the insurer may provide coverage for emergencies related to the condition. They wouldn't though cover already prescribed medication you buy on regular intervals.

You will need to ask any potential insurer very specifically about your child's condition, and provide them detailed recent medical history, to confirm if he can be covered for anything related to it.

Thank you very much! Is it also correct that during the 3 month waiting period that if I have workplace insurance (Manulife), they wont cover until OHIP starts?

You will need to call and ask them, as employer benefit plans can vary. Some will not cover you until you get OHIP, but I've heard others don't seem to care.

Remember that employer plans are giving you supplemental insurance, so it covers things that OHIP would usually not cover (like eye care, dentist, chiropractor, prescription drugs, etc). An employer plan will not cover you for anything that OHIP would pay for (like a trip to emergency room, or doctors appointment).

I would suspect that you supplemental benefit coverage will start when you start working unless the company doesn't cover people during a probationary period.

In terms of the pre-existing asthma. You should ask/figure out whether an emergency room visits if an asthma attack needs more intervention will be covered. Other visits and repeat prescriptions will not be covered so make sure to refill your prescriptions before leaving your country/job/etc.

I have manulife through work and for my plan, they will no cover someone until that person has OHIP coverage. Also keep in mind that they are not a replacement for OHIP. So even if they cover someone before they have OHIP, they won't cover the stuff that OHIP normally covers. Either way, you're still paying for the care out of pocket.
