My wife recently got a VISA to come to the Canada and she will be coming in to Ontario, Canada by the end of this month, Dec 2017. We have a situation, she has now a broken arm and it's fractured.

-Could anyone PLEASE tell me how long does it take to apply for a Health Card? When can i get it after applying? or Can I reimburse once her health card comes in?

-when she comes in here, she would obviously not be eligible to visit to the Doctor due to not having a health card. What are the alternatives? I obviously DO NOT want to pay higher fees to the Doctor.
What can I do here? What are my options?

I'm going to assume that you mean your wife was approved for PR and will be landing at the end of this month.

She will qualify for OHIP 3 months after she lands. If she needs to see a doctor before then, you will have to pay out-of-pocket.

As mentioned, she will qualify for OHIP coverage exactly 3 months to the day she lands as a PR. She can apply for her OHIP card anytime during this 3 month waiting period, there is no rush.

She can see a doctor also if she wants during first 3 months, she'll just need to pay out of pocket for the costs and any follow up procedures required. So she should try to put off as much as possible until the 3 months are up.

Since the condition is already existing, there won't be any options to get private insurance to cover any of the related costs.

You can't wait until the end of December to reset a fracture so that was never an option. By that time it will have started to heal. It is important to see a doctor in your home country or the untreated fracture could result in disability and pain.

If her PR visa expiry is later, it may be better to have her fracture treated and wait for the bone to heal (6 - 8 weeks to settle) before she land.

The 3 months waiting period would be a problem if there is any complication.

Thanks for the reply. Yes she is approved for PR and ready to land here in the end of december.

Thats the thing. I dont want to pay big bucks to the doctor. I heard if you get an insurance for 3 months so you pay about 300 t

You can get insurance, but it won't cover her arm since this is a pre-existing condition.

Yeah i was looking for some private insurance company/3rd party that could potentially cover her cast.

Yes travel insurance covers emergencies like breaking an arm not follow-up on existing conditions like the already broken arm.

No insurer will cover the cost of that, as it's a pre-existing condition.

Insurance companies are trying to make money. Why would they sell you a policy that you are guaranteed to make a claim on?

If it was a straight forward fracture that was set by someone who knew what they were doing and did a few x-rays you would only need to pay for cast removal, x-ray and fracture clinic visit. May be a bit more than $300 but not unreasonable. I would call a fracture clinic and ask about how much it would be.

Yeah i think thats definately a good call.
Since she has done multiple xrays in back home and has a cast on as well. In this specific case, i should coordinate with fracture clinic to find out about xray cost as well as cast removal and check up if possible. Thats the only concern i have.

They will take off the cast, do an x-ray to make sure the bone is straight and healed properly and then a quick check-up for things like numbness, range of motion, etc Any local fracture clinic will be fine.
