Renewing South African passport from within Canada or wait till we are in SA

Hi everyone!

My husband is a South African citizen with Canadian PR and I'm a Canadian citizen.

We are traveling back to South Africa from December 16, 2018 to January 18, 2019. His passport expires in February 2019.

We have some layovers in Europe where we were hoping to leave the airport, but now realized we need 6 months on his passport and the schengen visa too.

Just wondering what is the fastest way to get a new SA passport? I read on the SA Embassy website that it can take up to 6 months from Canada. But can we send to SA ourselves or wait till we get to SA and do it there? Then we could still go out of airport on the way back.

I see theres an online option that we haven't had a chance to fill out with his details yet. Has anyone tried this?
