Renew PR Card

I became a PR since March 2010 and my PR card will expire in 2015 March. I have been staying in Canada almost everyday in the past four years so I have no problem meeting residency requirement. However, I recently got a three year contract offer in the states and possibly for extension, and I will have to start my job in August. SO I am wondering how should I renew my PR card in this case?
1) Can I submit my application now for urgent process??---yet there are still about nine months before the PR card expires!
2) Should I go to US and then come back during Christmas to submit the extension? However, I won't be able to have enough time to wait to get back the card. Should I leave Canada without PR card and then come back to pick up the card by applying for travel document then?
Any suggestions? Please help! Thank you!

No, you can't renew it before 6 months.

Important information. Do not apply for a renewal of your current PR card if it is still valid for more than six (6) months (180 days), unless it is due to a legal name change. Otherwise, your application will be returned.

Re: Renew PR Card ---Can I submit eight months earlier?

Thanks!

SO in this case do I need to come back to Canada in person to apply in e.g. December, and then leave the country without PR card, and then apply for travel documents, and then come back afterwards to pick it up after ? Is there any easier ways? And p.s. What address should I enter to mail the card in this case?

There is a way that you can do this without a Travel Document.

Get someone you trust in Canada to post your application for you. However, you would have to give your US address in the application, which would probably mean that you have to pick up the new card in person. You *could* apply using the address of your trusted person in Canada but I believe that there have been cases where the renewal has been refused on the basis of IRPR Subparagraph 56(2)(a)(iv) the applicant's mailing address. ( http://laws-lois.justice.gc.ca/eng/regulations/sor-2002-227/page-20.html#h-26 )

Then, when you have to collect the card, assuming that you don't go for the questionable option above, cross the US/Canada land border in a private vehicle and enter on the basis of your COPR only. You don't require a PR card or a Travel Document if you do this, but it's more work for you.

Alternatively, apply for the Travel Document as you mentioned. If you have a visa-exempt passport, you probably can get on a plane without a Travel Document.

Re: Renew PR Card ---Can I submit eight months earlier?

Thank you! Sorry I still have one more question.

When you say "Get someone you trust in Canada to post your application for you"--do you mean someone within Canada mail the application for me when I am in the states? Will this create a conflict because at the dated time of the application I am actually outside of Canada..?

The rules don't state that you must be in Canada, only that the application must be submitted from Canada. (This is my understanding anyway).

Hey--I just went over the PR application form--it asks for the mailing and residential address IN CANADA. Thus, I do not actually see any place to put the US address--thus, I am not sure how l should let them know that I need to pick up the new card in person. But assuming that I leave my friends' address there--my employment information will reveal that I am actually in US. I am again confused....

Thank you so much for the answers!! really appreciate!

They won't mail your PR card to an address outside Canada. You must provide a Canadian mailing address. It can be a friend or whatever but must be in Canada. There is also a chance they will ask you to pick it up directly.
