As I scan through the various threads on here, I see some mention that both they and/or their spouse/partner have done relationship essays. Is this mandatory? When people say essay are they referring to the question where it asks how the relationship developed?

Just wondering as we want to include everything that will be beneficial. But I see nothing that specifically requests an "essay" in any form of the application.

If we do include essays, should one or both of us write one?

Any info is appreciated, thanks!

either of you can summarize one page! that will do :) That's what we did..

Hi!
We wrote those essays as per the request in the end of both questionnaires. Where they advise to provide any additional information that would make them believe, your relationship is genuine and continuing.
I wrote 5 pages; my husband - 2 pages. I think, even 1 page is good enough. We described how we met; how fell in love; how lived together. Especially, we accented little lovely things we did together, our common habits, funny stories, future plans etc.
I'm sure it's not mandatory, but it is an asset.

:)

By the end of both questionnaires, do you mean IMM5285 (Spouse Questionnaire) and IMM1344 (application to Sponsor)?

Thanks!

Are you filling an inland app?

Well we filled out the Outland Application

Yep, I applied the outland way as well.
You can benefit your app with the outland processing times and live in Canada as well.

Yes, but my husband is needing to work so needs the open work permit, hence we are applying inland. There are no work permit options with outland applications, right?

Right, but make sure you take into consideration the possibly extreme time difference between the two applications. I don't know your home country but remember the processing times on the CIC site for outland applications are not accurate for most people.

I would keep the "essay" to one page, keep it relevant. Think if you were a CIC officer looking through hundreds of these, would you want to read a college essay every time for someone's sponsorship proof? :P

My exact thoughts, that's why I kept mine simple.

What is more scary? A CIC officer reading different relationship timelines from your essay or your spouse discovering that you forget important dates/occurrences :P .

Hi guys, I'm on with this form now (imagine steam coming out of my ears).

When you guys say you're writing 1/2/5 page letters, are you doing this in response to Q9 on IMM 5490, or in addition to the answer you gave for Q9?

Thanks

Keep up the good work guys!!! :'(

No.. that comes apart from any question.. We wrote it as an independent story about us.
