I remember a discussion about how its illegal to mail passports in India. You may want to check if that applies to other immigration documents.

Not applicable. A passport is not an immigration document, & a PR card is not a passport 8)

I *would* recommend sending the card by registered mail, & photocopying it/noting the number before sending, just in case.

For India, being an Indian, I trust the registered post in India! Yes, DHL is good but super expensive.
So if time is not a limitation and you want to save some money yes, have a copy taken (digital) and have
it sent by regd post.
Remember if you are in Canada u receive PR card by regular snail mail that is way slower than delivery
of regular mail in India.
Regd post to India, if you track, takes longest to get to India, once in India it's super fast to get to cities in India, at least, my experience!

is it possible once the PR card is delivered to one of my friends address in canada, then I go back to canada to pick it up personally instead of sending the card to my home country? what would be the best option? thanks

Unless you have a visa-exempt passport, you will need to have your PR card mailed to you.

Or, they can apply for a Permanent Resident Travel Document...

There is no need to apply for a PRTD when you can simply have the PR card mailed to you. If you choose to apply for a PRTD, they will not question it.

There IS a risk of the PR Card being lost in transit from Canada. Mine went via the USA, where the FedEx envelope was opened by US Customs. In my case, this just resulted in an extra delay in getting through the US to the UK. It was not confiscated.

exactly, sending PR card to home country is quite risky..if possible i prefer to go back and pick it up personally, but i want to make sure once i go back for the 2nd time, the PR card is already delivered to my friends address. please advise
