Hi all seniors and captain Qorax,

i have landed in Toronto, ON last week. now i am confused about which would be the cheaper and better phone carrier would be..

i am also wondering whether i can get one straight away using my passport and landing documents as proof, as some people here told me to have driving license first coz they are asking for photo id n our passport wont work...

and also please suggest me the location where i can get sim card for my phone..i live in Mississauga.

please suggest me.

thanks,

regards

Do you NEED a contract?
It is possible to get pre-pay and this doesn't require a contract at all.
Fido does pre-pay and so do some of the others. Wind looks like a cheap supplier but I have not tried them.

Cheaper & better? Well, don't they contradict each other most often?

Anyway, as a newcomer; I would go with WIND. Despite their call-drops, network problems; I would still choose it over anything. Let me explain why:

  • No contract
  • You can choose monthly plan as "pre-pay"
  • Least $30 would give you unlimited province-wide calling and data (nothing can beat it)
  • Regular features like Caller ID, Call Waiting, Call Forwarding are all included
  • They used to have extra/add-on for unlimited international calling to your chosen country for $10~$20. I'm not sure if they still have this. If they do; you can certainly add India with extra $15/$20.

You can find any carrier in a shopping mall. Some are also available in marketplaces. Pre-paid cards are sold in gas stations. Go to individual carrier's site and you'll find their nearly location.

It will really depend on where you will be using your phone, as one of the new market entrants (Wind, Mobilicity and Public Mobile) may or may not have a cell tower in your area. You can check the coverage here: http://www.comparecellular.com/coverage-maps/

I ended up selecting Fido because they offered the reliability of Rogers' network coupled with the "all you can talk" features of the upstarts. It's a bit more than Wind, but the coverage in my area is much better.

You shouldn't have any issues getting a SIM card with your passport and landing papers, particularly if it is a prepaid plan.

Here's what worked for me, certainly not guaranteed to work for everyone, but if you can be resourceful with technology and convincing to a Big 3 rep (took me 2 hours and a lot of belligerence to convince them to switch me), better for you:

Buy Samsung Note from Bell on 3 year contract making Bell subsidize it. (in the Note's case, less than $200 versus over $800 after taxes)

Convince Bell rep to kill your regular phone plan (i.e. voice) and put you on a flex tablet data plan (mine is a flex plan that is a flat rate of $20 for 500mb and $35 from 500mb-5GB) while remaining on the same contract length

Download Google Voice (must install manually as Canada Google Play and iTunes don't have it there to download), Download Talkatone

Set up Google Voice Account with US forwarding number, add a US GV number.

Change your number for $10, because you have a forwarding number, get a 403 area code number (Canada) since the loophole is still there.

You'll have two numbers on the account, the US GV number you received will be gone in 90 days, if you want to keep it, pay $20 more and you have a US and Canada number, as in two numbers on the same account.

Enjoy unlimited calls/texts to North America, being able to receive calls on your phone, web browser, voicemail transcriptions, being able to send and receive cell text messages via email, and having a lot of extra data left over per month to watch videos, stream audio, etc. Also enjoy the benefits of CallerID and other things that they charge ridiculous amounts for, enjoy great nationwide data reception from one of the Big 3 companies while sticking it to them and paying Mobilicity/Wind mobile prices, if not less.

Since someone mentioned India, I believe they offer credits to purchase for calling India, but there might be better services to use for that.
