Hi guys, I was a refugee and since IRCC was taking too long to issue a travel document for me, I renewed my passport from my home country (Iran) without travelling there. After that I travelled with that passport once to Mexico for 8 days. I applied for citizenship on April 2024 but my status is still in prohibitions. After reading notes, I am really worried about my application revocation. I’d really appreciate it if anyone can help.

There is a large cessation thread in the citizenship section of the forum. Here is the link: https://www.canadavisa.com/canada-immigration-discussion-board/threads/refugee-status-cessation-and-prs-applying-for-citizenship.333455/page-66#post-10982048

You should not have renewed your home county passport or used it to travel. That was a very big mistake. However it is good news that you did not travel to your home country. Do not use that passport to travel any further. The fact you did not travel to your home country most likely means IRCC will not initiate cessation proceedings against you

For your citizenship application, there is not much you can do but wait.

The fact that his/her application is at LPP since April, there is high chance that his file is referred to Minister for Cessation Proceeding. Despite the fact that, he/she did not travel back to Iran, but applying for a passport itself is one of the grounds for cessation. Current timeline for Citizenship Application for April applicant are almost finalized but his/her Citizenship Grant is not moving since April 2024. That 8days in Mexico become a nightmare now. Bad decision...

Apply for notes, may be it could shed some light.

Thank you for responding. Is it possible to explain what happens if my case is sent to the minister for cessation proceeding? Does it mean they will deport me?

they will not deport you immediately, there will be some time and options at different stages. You can apply for a judicial review in federal court etc. This is the thread of others who applied for citizenship in april 2024- many still havent received citizenship https://www.canadavisa.com/canada-immigration-discussion-board/threads/april-2024-citizenship-application.841910/page-49

as others have said apply for your ATIP/GCMS notes and see what insight you can get- it'll cost $5 and take a month to get a digital copy.

I would also call IRCC and enquire about your application/what the latest update is, and if it is passed the standard processing time the agent on the phone can send a message to the officer processing your application for an update.

good luck and keep us posted!
