Hi

I would appreciate some info about how recruitment companies work in Canada.

As I will be making a trip back to Toronto next Spring, one of my "to dos" is to seek for an appointment with the recruitment companies to find out abt the availability of jobs for my field of work. This approach is quite common from where I come from but I'm not sure if it the same applies in Canada?

Can someone guide me about this please. Thx

Some basics involve understanding there is a difference between Placement Agencies and (Executive) Recruiters or HeadHunters. Placement Agencies typically deal with junior - mid positions - some specialize in certain industries and they often work on a contingency basis which means they don't have the exclusive contract to a certain search. They are potentially competing against other placement agencies to find a person. Only the company whose person is successfully hired gets the commission.

Executive Recruiters typically (with some exceptions) deal with Senior, or 100k+ positions. They are typically retained and exclusively looking for the ideal candidate. Many recruiters specialize in certain industries.

In either situation, you as the job searcher should NEVER pay any money to meet with them, or have them them represent you. If they ask for any $$, walk away. They are not a real agency/recruiter.

Many agencies/recruiters will only meet with you IF you have qualifications that meet their current needs, so don't be disheartened if you don't get alot of meetings. Asking for 20 minutes of their time is reasonable, asking for an hour is not.

Read more information on Agency/Recruiters here and view the listings of some in the area you're targetting:
