Here is a reason to become a citizen. You can be stripped of your PR status and deported. But as of yet they can't strip you of citizenship. It happened to somebody in this news article here: http://www2.canada.com/cowichanvalleycitizen/news/story.html?id=b2ade928-932d-4c44-844d-f7d45e921036

If she had gotten citizenship, like she could have, she would not be facing deportation right now for a silly mistake on her paperwork.
You can even be stripped of citizenship if it is found out that you gained your PR by misrepresentation.

To a layman, what she did seems like a silly mistake but I will try to explain.

She was sponsored by her mother as an adult dependent child. One of the requirements to qualify is that the dependent child is not married or in a common law relationship. She said that she wasn't and she gained her PR. Then she goes back to the Philippines and signs a form stating that she has been co-habiting with her boyfriend for the past 5 years. Of course, immigration thinks she must have lied on her immigration forms when she said she wasn't so this has cost her her PR.

Now, she probably did not realize the implications of signing that form when she did but when you choose to lie on forms you fill out, you can not be certain that immigration will believe you when you try to tell them which forms you lied on and on which you told the truth.

As for not knowing what they signed, you are supposed to read things before you sign them. Neither of them realized that they were signing that they lived together for 5 years? .. or more likely, they did realize they were lying, they just thought it was ok because they didn't realize it would cost her her PR.

It's unfortunate what happened to her but these are immigration rules.

Make sure you don't lie on any of your paperwork and then you'll be fine.

However, possible criminality would be one reason to get citizenship. If you are accused and convicted of a crime, you can be deported if you are a PR. However, if you are a citizen, you can't.

What Leon said. You can definitely be stripped of citizenship as well if it was obtained through fraud. See:

I have lived in handful of countries including US. I feel Canada is still a safe and good place to live. So canadian citizenship is worth it. Only thing I hate about Canada is the health care. It is terribly bad..

Many of us don't give a sh*t about Canada or Canadian politics after years of living here, so don't give a f--k about our voting rights. We just want to get the hell out of here before being bled to death due to very high living expenses and lack of meaningful employment opportunities. But CIC is doing its best to lock us up here as long as possible by delaying citizenship app processing these days, making us go nuts!
People like you should never have been let into this great country in the first place

I have yet to find a family doctor that would give me an appointment not 3 months away from the date of my booking and even then wont spend more than 2 minutes with me in discussing my health. Canada is a great country and I appreciate the opportunity to live here. But these pet peeves, I just can't keep my mouth shut on them :D

I think this is primarily a result of the flawed immigration system that allows for abuse by people who don't live in Canada but yet retain their health cards. I know of quite a few examples of people who are living in Dubai or Saudi Arabia, and only come to Canada when they need to have a medical procedure done. It's pathetic.

What kind of procedure worth of $1500 air ticket, all the hassle and accompanying expenses and waiting for an appointment for weeks/months?

Umm...heart surgery, for example? And what are the hassles or expenses that you refer to? Whatever you mean, I'm sure they are minuscule in comparison to the quality of healthcare received for no cost, particularly in comparison to what is available in other countries.

Health care can't always know if someone is living in the province. If they found out that these people are not living there, they'd cancel their coverage and send them a bill.

If you as a tax payer do not agree with paying for these peoples health care, you should report it to the health care in your province that they are not living in Canada.
