Hello All,

Hi Baran,

I am Dilip kumar from India. Currently working in Saudi Arabia as Mechanical Engg. Congrats to those who cleared IELTS -GT.
I appeared for IELTS in India and Saudi arabia for about 8 times and always loosing in READING to get 6 points. I am stuck at 5.5 and 5 all the times. In the first attempt i scored 6.5 in reading but lost in Writing in that attempt.

So after 1st attempt and untill now i am unable to score 6 in READING. could any one pls advice me on how to get 6 BAND IN READING MODULE. I am looking after all the strategies . I am unable to manage time to attempt for last 4-5 questions, so for the last 4-5 questions i am attempting blindly.

I am facing difficulty especially with :

choose the correct answer from multiple choices
T/F/NG

I request you to please revert me with positive strategies. pls suggest me on how to approach for READING .

This thread will help all the IELTS aspriants. Specially for READING MODULE.
:)

Hi, I have improved my reading (Academics) so far by applying some strategies and tricks. Few years ago i got 6 in reading, I will retake the exam on 20th September and I am expecting 8 bands as usual score in my practice. Let's start

1: How to manage time

Divide equal time to all three paragraphs ( 17 minutes for each - Total 51 minutes ) and you should strictly follow this. Don't waste your time if you could not find the answers, just move to next paragraph. Don't not practice with 60 minutes , it will worth rewarding in end when you will find your speed to find question has considerably increased. In exam, you can utilize rest of the 9 minutes to find the answer of questions that you have left with.

According to my experience, Mostly 2nd paragraph is difficult than first and third one. Don't waste too much time on it and next paragraph will be bit easy. You can not attempt all the questions in just 1 hour so target to attempt maximum questions not all of them

Eat ups Questions

Some questions are specially created for eating up the time such as heading & matching. First read all the question of the paragraph so you can find answer to other questions ( Blanks, True,False,NotGiven) simultaneously by reading sections by sections. It will save up to 40% of your time. if you think you are getting puzzled then don't continue with this. Just skim through the section ( Don't read every line) and get the idea that what they talking about.

True,False,Not Given

These questions are always easy to find. If the given information match 100% then answer is True, If there is 100% contradiction then false. From 0 to 99% is Not Given.

Here is a good example on this link : http://www.ieltsbuddy.com/true-false-not-given.html

2: How to find correct answer

Beaware from traps, They are specially designed to misguide the candidate. Sometimes exact words match with the questions but meaning is different. First understand the question completely then verify your answer twice.

Sometimes Information is given in Graphs and diagrams , Don't ignore them

Question are not always in serialized order in paragraph. The answer could be in the end or in the middle. If you didn't find the any information then it doesn't mean answer is not given or too difficult to find.

Maintain your accuracy rate per paragraph. This could be only achieved through the efficient time management. If your time is up. Then you can answer randomly it works especially for True,False questions.

Dear All,

I am really thank full for your strategies. That's an elaborated reply and will be useful for all the IELTS aspirants.

Should i practice READING - Academic or GT ? When i practice Academic module, its taking more than 60 mins. and earlier after practicing the test i used to check the answers and keep it away, but now i am investigating for wrong answers . why it is wrong? what strategy is in ? so that helps me not get wrong in next practice.

After first attempt and until now i dint not get the Question types of - choose the correct heading for each passages. I am good in attempting this type of Questions. In most of the practice tests i used to get right answers.

My applied strategy :

In my previous attempt i adopted a strategy in SECTION -3 and it really saved time.

In section -3, first i started with Fill in the blanks from 36 -40, because every time i used to hurry up if i don't start with blanks first and leave 3 blanks empty with wrong answers.

pls share ur strategies during attempting the exam. so that we can save time.

Hi Kumar,

In section -I : we will have 2 different passages to answer.
In section -II: We will have 2 different passages to answer.
In section -III: We have 1 long passage to answer and will be bit difficult than section 1 & 2. Need to understand more and passage involves vocabulary.

Try practicing with Academic and then switch on to GT.

Hi Experts,

Thanks for ur wonderful tips. As i am getting 5.5 band all the times in Reading, which means that i am in the range of 27-30 questions right. So need to get 30 right to get 6 band.

My approach for READING in Exam:

* I used to read the whole passages(from section I-III) in answering the questions, so this way i am lacking my time.

* If i could manage at least 3-5 minutes of time at the end i would answer the last 4 questions correctly.

* In exam, i underline the key words with highlighter and few with pencil. If i underline all the keywords with pencil, i could not find the words quickly, so i mix to underline with highlighter.

* I am good at answering : Match the Headings, fill in the blanks, matching sentence to paragraphs, 50% good in answering T/F/NG, 50% good in answering Multiple choice questions.

This was my approach in past exams. Could you please correct me, where i need to improve to get 6 band.

Thank Q.

Hi dilip
I took my IELTS G test on 16th august and i got 8.5 in reading. What i do for reading is that instead of reading the paragraph first i first read the requirements. After reading the requirements I keep my eyes open for key words and I usually find them in the paragraph. hope it helps.

I took the exam on Sept 20th and got 9 in Reading module.

As someone mentioned earlier, it is best to read the questions first before even looking at the passage. The questions are usually sequential based on the content of the passage. So read the first question and then start reading the passage trying to find the answer to that question. Once you found that answer, move on and read the next question and read the passage from where you left off to find the second answer. Using this method, I was able to finish the first few passages in just 7-8 minutes each.

Try practicing this way and I'm sure you will achieve your desired score. Good luck!
