Hi all, I am an international student who has been studying in Canada for the past 2 years. Recently my Visa expired on the 31/03/2016. Prior to this i had applied for an extension of my visa and study permit. They had sent me in the mail my study permits, before I left Canada I asked if this was sufficient enough to return to Canada as they did not issue me a new visa. The immigration officer when i was departing Canada informed me that my student permit and work permit were acceptable, So i left and came back to my home country for two weeks. I attempted to leave today and was rejected to fly by the airline as they say my visa is expired and my study permit does not mean anything to them,

My study permit says I am able to study until Nov. 2016. How is it possible they issued me the study permit past my visa date and allowed me to travel but now I cant leave my home country as they say i need an up to date visa. What do I need to do now in order to go back to school as my final summer semester has begun a week ago and i need to return as soon as possible.

You need to apply for a TRV.

You always need a valid TRV to re-enter Canada, unless you only visit the US. It sounds like you only applied to extend your study permit.

A valid TRV is not required to be in Canada, only for entry. People in Canada are granted stays beyond the validity of their TRV all the time, as the two have nothing to do with each other.
