Hello,

I have put myself in a tricky situation.

Hope you can help with an advice!

I am an EXCHANGE student from the UK, studying for the full year in University of Toronto. I received my study permit in September IN Canada after I had arrived, and it was supposed to be valid till end of May. The study permit itself did not grant me re-entry, therefore it would get cancelled if I left. and I had to leave for unforseen circumstances to travel back home. Now, when I go back my study permit is cancelled and it does not grant me entry into the country, as I have less than 6 months left to study would they allow me to enter with a tourist visa? and will it still be possible to apply for a study permit again, to be able to work?
(Exchange students are allowed to apply for study permit within the country, just not sure about re-applying)

Thanks!!!

Hi,

Basically there is a study permit and a temporary resident visa that is required to enter Canada. UK citizens are visa exempt. The study permit itself does not allow entry for anyone. It is there to permit you to study while you are inside Canada. As long as you are pursuing the studies outlined in your study permit, you can go back and resume your studies.

Unless, does it explicitly state in the conditions that your permit will be canceled if you left Canada? Then that is a different case that I have not seen before. Hope this helps. I would call the Canadian embassy/consulate in the UK to confirm.

You can't work off campus if you are in Canada as an exchange student. If you were working off campus before you left, you were engaged in illegal work which is a violation of your study permit. You also will not qualify for a post graduate work permit as an exchange student. So the answer to the work question is no.
