Quick question about address/employment history "gaps"

Hello all,

My question is what constitutes a gap in the eyes of CIC?

Example: When filling in information about my housing history, there's only space to write the year and month. So if I moved out of one apartment "2016-12" and moved into another apartment "2017-01", would this be considered a gap of one month?

And a similar example for employment history... if my wife finished working somewhere "2017-03" but started working the following month "2017-04", is this considered a gap?

There is no way to distinguish a specific date. I mean, if someone quit their job this year on April 1st and started working somewhere else on May 1st, wouldn't this look the same as someone who quit their job April 30th and started working May 1st? (i.e. 2019-04)

No, these dates won't be considered a month-long gap. As you say, you can move out of one place on Aug 31 and into the next on Sep 1, but you cannot specify that on the form.

I had the same question. I have had 3 or more than 6 months between jobs. Do I have to state "Unemployed" in these gaps, or just carry on writing in the next box my next job? Can someone please explain the definition of "Gap" for us when filling out employment history?

You should write "Unemployed" if it's a long gap like 3+ months, because this is Personal History. IRCC wants to know what you have been doing, and if you leave six month holes in your history, it will look odd.

There's no explicit definition of a gap as far as I know. However, it's usually fairly obvious - the form doesn't allow for days, so anything less than a month is not really a gap. Consecutive months won't constitute a gap either since there's no way to specify 31 Aug - 1 Sep; all you can do is say Aug -> Sep.

If it's more than 2 months, it's a gap. So if you left an job on 31 August, and started working at a new job on 1st Oct, there's a missing month that needs to be explained. They won't care that you were unemployed - you could have been travelling, or simply relaxing at home between jobs.
