Questions about Open Work Permit application (IMM 5710)

Hi all,

I'm in the process of sponsoring my wife for permanent residence and we've decided to apply for an OWP alongside our PR application.

On the IMM 5710 form, we're having a couple issues.

In the employment history section, the form states: "Give details of your employment for the past 10 years, including if you have held any government positions".

1. Do we need to account for employment gaps in this section? In form IMM 5669 my wife had to account for employment gaps, but it was specified on the form.

2. Also, should my wife fill in the info for the past 10 years? As my wife is 25 years old, 10 years would be before she was 18 and she didn't start her first job until she was 20 years old.

3. Last, if my wife doesn't have enough room on the form for her past employment, should we just attach a separate sheet to the form?

Thanks to anyone who can help us!

edit: One more question!

In the "Coming into Canada" section, question 4 says to provide a document number for most recent Visitor Record, Study Permit, Work Permit, etc. Should we provide the number she was given for her eTa?

Hoping someone can answer these questions for you as I have similar questions. Also would like to know, are you filling out the OWP application online or on paper because I'm confused as to whether we still include the paper version along with the PR application. When I went to download the form it said as of June 2019 you must submit online but i'm not sure if that applies to us sending a PR application in. Hopefully a forum member can clarify this as well.

As far as I know, you can submit a paper application at the same time as the PR application. There's actually a spot on the Document Checklist where you can inform CIC that you're including the OWP application.

Still would like some guidance on how to fill out the Employment History section in the OWP IMM 5710. Do we have to account for unemployment periods and gaps in employment? In other words, do we copy what we put in Personal History for IMM 5669? How come there's only 4 spaces, do we add more on a separate sheet?

Provide details about your current Activity / Occupation:

  • Enter the dates (year and month) you have been working at your occupation,
  • The activity/occupation or a brief description of your position. If you do not work, describe what you are currently doing (retired, not working, going to school, etc.),
  • Indicate the name of the company or employer or facility where you work,
  • City or Town,
  • Country,
  • Province/State, if applicable.
Question 2

Previous Activity / Occupation

Provide details of your previous Activity / Occupation for the past 10 years. If you are retired, provide the 10 years before your retirement:

Note: If you need more space, print out an additional page of the form, complete this section and submit it with your application.

Yes, you need to account for periods of unemployment. Best to copy what you've got on 5669 and double check to ensure it's a gapless timeline. Add it on a separate sheet if you need to and put the form # and question # at the top of the page.

Agree. This is what I was thinking would be best. Better to give them ALL the information then leave stuff out. Thanks

My lawyer advised to put exactly what you put on the 5669 form, so your entire detailed history over last 10 years including unemployment periods or travel. This won't fit on the 5710 form so if you need extra space to do so in Excel, setting the sheet in the exact same format as the table given in form 5669, i.e. exact same column headings and in same order. Then place this sheet (as a pdf ideally) directly under your 5710 form when sending to IRCC
