Yes, it is actually the airline that might have a problem with only a one-way ticket. If they let someone board that plane with a one-way ticket, and then that person is denied landing, the airline is in big trouble, monetarily and otherwise. They are supposed to be checking first. Then when you cross the border, the border agent might also ask to see proof of a ticket out of Canada.

Cool. Thanks for the advice.

As someone mentioned above book a ticket from Australia to say Edmonton, AB and at the same time book a ticket for 4 months later to Seattle.
Would I need to provide a US visa? Would I need one being an Australian citizen?

No Australians are also visa exempt for the USA too.

Australians do need a visa waiver though:

Ohhh, is that like the new program they are implementing in Canada for 2016, where visa exempt countries need to be pre approved before they enter the country?

I don't know. I drove across with the missus, who was in Canada as a tourist. We were sent to secondary where she had to fill out a form stating she had no criminal record or ties to Nazis. I guess they don't update their forms very often. Cost was minimal, $14 I think. With that form, she was able to enter and exit the US as many times as she liked for a set period, I want to say 90 days? She was told to make sure she handed her form in when she was leaving for good, in order to make things easier in future. Basically if they don't get the form back, they don't know that she left the country.
