Hello all

I have a question regarding one way tickets I have endeavored to research if there would be any issues regarding traveling from Australia to Canada on a one way ticket.

What I am trying to find out is if there would be any issues with customs in Australia and Canada if I was to travel on a one way ticket.
My common law partner and her family is currently living and working in Alberta and if I wanted to stay with her for an unspecified time for example 4 -5 months.
I was intending to purchase a ticket back to Australia if needed as were expecting my PR to be completed in 4-5 months.

Or would I need to buy a return ticket?

Return ticket would be better choice with extended validity period unless you are extremely tight with financial position.

If you buy one way ticket, you might have to explain how will you come back and when..usually visitors are required to ensure return journey by buying return ticket.

I guess a return ticket that is refundable is the way to go.
Thanks for the responses.

You have the option of claiming "dual intent" if your sponsor has SA. You just need to demonstrate you have enough money during your stay, and that if your application is denied, you will leave Canada.

If it was me I'd get a return flight as it just provides more insurance that a border agent will let you through without issue than with a one way. Trying to save money even if funds were tight is not a good gamble imo, as you could end up missing out on all your plans and time with your loved one.. Once you're in you'll have up to a 6 month stay and you do not need to get on your return flight.. The last time my wife came here from the US we made sure to get a return flight and we never used it.. The time before we had purchased a one way when she was my girlfriend at the time and they almost did not let her in and put her through the third degree.. All depends on the border agents at the time, you just can never know as they are all different.

There have been many on this forum who have entered Canada with dual intent. One recently was from Australia. There is no need to waste money on a return ticket, especially a citizen from a visa exempt country.

If the OP is more comfortable purchasing a ticket, then I wouldn't purchase a return ticket back to Australia, those tickets are very high in price. I would purchase a one way ticket out of Calgary to Seattle for $179 on Expedia.ca

Good ideas Saria 8) I was just speaking in general about not taking a gamble on a one way flight, but your ideas make good sense.

I would buy a return ticket or a ticket out of Canada to somewhere else too just to be safe.

Or buy a cheap bus/train ticket out of Canada even if you don't intend to use it (say Vancouver to Seattle or Montreal to New York). After all, what the airline/customs wants to know is that you will be leaving the country, the method of transportation doesn't really matter and there's no law saying you have to go back to your country of origin. I've done this a couple of times with no issues (I always left before the 6 months were up though but that's not the point).

I think i had one way ticket twice, or even more. or even "worse": ticket from canada to somewhere, and back. yep, few times for sure, never a problem. i just had with me proof of my ties to my country, like job contract (i work remotely), but i was never asked for it, also nobody ever checked my ticket.

Make sure the airline will let you fly on a way ticket. Some won't let you do it without having some kind of status in the destination country.

PS 4-5 months is very optimistic, even if it goes to Sydney. Don't forget the app could go to Ottawa, lately they're on the slow side.

I asked this before and people said it was ok so I went on a one way flight, and of course I was sent to secondary, just lots of questions but they let me in and limited my stay . A return flight is better and just rebook it if you need to stay longer.

My son is Canadian born and lives here in Canada . We had to go home for my mums funeral and my son's Canadian passport had expired so he used his British to get into the U.K. e

Leaving the U.K. he didn't have a return ticket because he was coming home, using his British passport . We had one hell of a job getting him on that plane without a return ticket. 4 am in the morning we had to get his Canadian passport info. Luckily for us i had sent all the passport information to myself via email .

So i would suggest getting a refundable ticket so they will let you board .
