I am applying for permanent residency soon. A few years ago, I have engaged in unauthorized work with payslip and all. What is the chances that CIC might find out about it when they check my Permanent Residency application.

Ideas would be greatly appreciated.

I don't think any of us can tell you what the chances are that CIC will find out.

I would declare the unauthorized work in your employment history of your PR application. If you fail to declare it and CIC finds out, they will make a finding of misrepresentation, refuse your file and likely issue you a 2 year ban from entering Canada.

When you say payslip and all, does this mean taxes were deducted from your salary and deposited on your behalf by the employer? As from what I have heard unauthorized work is paid for in cash over the counter. If you were a tax payer it is likely to show up in your background check.

Were you a full-time student in Canada?

deductions, contributions to EI and taxes were deducted just like a legitimate job must have. Yes, I was a full time student then.

Well in that case don't hide it. You need to give details of everything you did since your 18th birthday, don't forget to mention the job/jobs in Canada... A lot of people live illegally in these developed countries and eventually become legal permanent residents, at least you were living there legally.

In my opinion (and only my opinion, based on what I have read and discussions I have had) the Visa Officer will act more harshly to you lying on your application, than you working while being a full-time student without permission, to make ends meat and not be a burden on your parents.

What kind of restrictions applied to you, while you were studying? When you say unauthorized work, do you mean you exceeded the maximum allowable work hours a student can work on a student visa or are you talking about working without your universities permission?
