Hi All,
I came to Canada on Spousal category but I am divorced now.
Should I be renewing my PR as a principal applicant? If so would there be any requirement for additional document other than (1) primary identity- passport and (2) a copy of record of landing.

Thanks
GL

If you have already landed in Canada, you are a Permenant Resident. You only need meet the residency obligation to maintain your status. No need to renew your PR card if you have no plans to travel outside the country. Divorce does not affect your status in Canada once you are a Permenant Resident.

Thanks Steaky,
I am outside Canada now and I am planning to come back to Canada
I moved out of Canada soon after the divorce but I am being advised by many not to loose my PR status in Canada and the oppurtunity to become a citizen later

If I comeback I will have to renew my PR inorder to apply for citizenship later. I dont qualify for 1095 days rule now.

My worry is if I renew my PR, will there be any additional document requirement because of the divorce!

Thanks
GL

If you return to Canada, you don't have to renew your PR card if you have no plans to travel outside the country. If you are meet the requirement, you can apply for citizenship.

In order to keep your PR status, you have to live in Canada for at least 730 days in your first 5 years as a PR and each 5 year period after that. If you have been outside Canada now for more than 3 years, you have already lost your PR. If not, then you should go back to Canada to stay before that happens if you want to keep your PR.

You can not renew your PR card from outside Canada. If it has already expired but you do meet the residency requirements, you can apply for a PR travel document at a Canadian embassy allowing you to return to Canada and apply to renew your PR card once you arrive.
