Hello, I came to Canada as a tourist to look for a job and be on vacation. I had an interview with a company today that works in the oil field and they want to hire me and are willing to get me a work permit they just told me I would have to find out some more information on what is required from now on and what I have to do? And where could I go change my visitors visa to a work visa? Thank you in advance.

The first step is for your employer to obtain an approved LMIA. You can't do anything until the employer has completed this step.

What is LMIA? And how would they apply for it?

LMIA is labour market impact assessment. It's a assessment carried out by service Canada which investigates whether employer has made any efforts to recruit Canadian citizens or PR candidates.

After 4 weeks of advertising, the employer has to file a LMIA to service Canada by paying 1000can dollars (recently increased from $275).

Good part is if service Canada feels your employer has made reasonable efforts to hire locals and could not find the candidate, LMIA is issued positive. Then, you should apply work permit using this positive LMIA.

Bad part is processing time. The processing time varies from 8 to 20 weeks.

During the recent overhaul, numerous changes were announced on this system. Based on your pay, lot of things change.

Are you positive that they would have to apply for a LMIA as far as I know it doesnt go for every job?

Yes - an LMIA is mandatory.

Yes - once you have an approved LMIA you can obtain a work permit at a land border.
