So I work for the airlines and I need my passport to travel each week. Does anyone know what I should do at the time that they request my passport? Anyone know if there is same day service?
It depends on which VO ends up issuing your visa. Ottawa is requesting scanned copies of passports and will mail you the CoPR directly; LA is requesting that the physical passport to be mailed.
If LA requests the passport, you can either ask them whether they could accept a scanned copy (based on http://www.cic.gc.ca/english/resources/manuals/bulletins/2011/ob348a.asp which states:
Code:
An officer may use discretion in determining whether it is necessary to see the original passport or whether a photocopy of all passport pages is sufficient. A photocopy of only the bio-data page is not acceptable, as notations may have been made on other pages regarding the individual’s name, marital status or other pertinent information.
Otherwise, you can get a second US passport (if you are a US citizen) if you need to travel and the first one is unavailable due to visa processing (same day service available at US State Department Passport Offices) - see http://travel.state.gov/passport/hurry/hurry_831.html for the list of locations. The second passport is valid for 2 years and "when a passport needed for immediate travel is unavailable due to prolonged delays in processing a foreign visa application" is one of the reasons it can be issued. The State Department document at http://www.state.gov/documents/organization/94669.pdf has the details. The section I quoted is on page 1 - section 7(2)(b).
